How to decode the sidewall of your tyre?

by Sumit Das on Jul 28, 2021 GPS 368 Views

On the sidewall of a tyre, you can find a wealth of useful information. The car tyre label may appear to be overwhelming to the car owner at first look. The tyre designation contains all of the important information that you require. It includes the tyres online name and a series of numbers and letters that detail the speed rating, load index, construction, tyre size, and more. Let’s understand why tyre marks exist, how to correctly read them, and what they mean for your tyre.

Where can you learn everything you need to know about automobile tyres?

Even if not all possible tyre designations are listed on the tyres, the tyre's sidewall will provide all necessary dimensions and criteria to evaluate whether a tyre is acceptable for a vehicle. Check the "CoC" if you're seeking all tyre sizes that are compatible with a vehicle (Certification of Conformity). Why is it crucial to comprehend the markings? Because automobile tyres can be differentiated based on various qualities and criteria, the labelling also shows if the tyre is suitable for a specific vehicle. But what does the information on a car tyre's sidewall mean?

Decode tyre markings, for example

You've learned a lot about tyre markings so far. Our goal is for you to read the markings on the sidewall of the tyre at all times. With the help of an example tyre, we'll explain what the numbers and letters mean and teach you how to precisely decode your tyres' designations. For instance, consider the following sequence of tyre markings:

245/35 R 17 75 H

Width of a tyre

The number "245" is the first to show up in the entire sequence. This is the tyre’s width from a sidewall to the other (in mm).

Aspect Ratio

The next in this sequence after the slash is "35." The aspect ratio is the 195 65 r15 tyres height profile outside the rim expressed as a part of the tyre's width. We get this value when you divide the tyre section's section height by the section width of the tyre. Therefore, if a tyre's aspect ratio is 35, it signifies that the tyre's height is 35 per cent of its entire width.

Tyre Construction

The next tyre marker in the series is a letter rather than a number. The letter denotes the sort of tyre construction used in the casing, in this case, "R" for Radial tyre construction. The letters "B" and "D" stand for a Bias-ply and Diagonal tyre construction. The most prevalent tyres nowadays are radial tyres. Because the ply cords situated internally are oriented in a radial orientation, from a bead to the next, they're called radial at 90-degree angles to the tyre's rotation. In our case, the number “17” denotes the diameter of the car’s wheel rim measured in inches.

Diagonal tyres have mostly replaced solid rubber tyres and, as a result of the diagonal fabric layers, are generally more durable. Cross-ply tyres heat up and wear out more quickly due to their increased resistance. Radial tyres are now often utilised on our roads. The radial tyre gets its name from the way it's made. The carcass cables are set at right angles to the direction of movement and are made up of numerous nylon and steel fabric layers that absorb shocks and unevenness exceptionally well. The use of radial and cross-ply tyres at the same time is illegal.

Load Index

The load index is the places post the diameter of the rim. The number “75” in the given an example refers to the upper limit of load a tyre could support once completely inflated. Load indices for passenger tyres range from 75 to 105, with each numeric number corresponding to a specified load capacity. A chart signifying the load index in your car or documentation of a tyre describes the carrying capacity for each number.

Speed Rating

The speed rating is the last item on our list. The tyre’s speed rating is represented by letters in a range of A to Z. Each letter represents the upper-speed limit a tyre can maintain while carrying its prescribed weight. In our case, “H” corresponds to a top speed of 209 kph. Drivers should not exceed legal speed limits, even if a car tyre can perform at this level of speed.

Additional inscriptions

Other symbols and letters may appear on the walls after this series of information.

They signify the following in our example:

- A run-flat tyre has reinforced walls; this self-supporting run-flat (SSR) tyre may continue to be used even if pressure is lost.

- Mercedes Original Equipment key: The tyre is a Mercedes Original Equipment run-flat tyre (MOE)

- The tyre is excellent for mud and snow situations, according to M+S.

- DOT code: This vehicle complies with the Department of Transportation's (DOT) vehicle safety regulations.

- Week of production: 36th

- Year of production: 2016

Summary

Before purchasing car tyres online, you must know the range of tyres being offered in the market. This would help you choose a set of tyres that would be closest to the recommendations given by the car’s manufacturer in the manual. If you struggle with finding the appropriate tyres for your car, you could seek guidance from an expert who would help you make the right decision.
