The printed circuit board (PCB) was created by Paul Eisle in 1936 and was the first of its type. However, it was not until the 1950s that printed circuit boards gained broad usage when the United States Defense Industry began incorporating them into its bomb detonation systems. PCBs are now found in virtually every manufactured device, including automobiles, cellular telephones, and personal computers.
Below is a summary of the PCB fabrication procedures.
First, two distinct types of software are utilized to construct printed circuit boards (PCBs). Circuits are built using computer-aided design (CAD) software, which generates the electronic schematic for the constructed circuit. After creating the design, engineers will use Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software to construct a prototype printed circuit board (PCB) for testing.
Following the completion of the PCB prototype, the production process begins with selecting the material that will be utilized to manufacture the printed circuit board. There are several varieties of printed circuit board materials available, but the most common ones, depending on the application and the customer's requirements, are as follows: Alumina, Arlon, Bakelite, CEM1, CEM5, Ceramic, FR1, FR4, FR4 High Temperature, GeTek, Nelco, Polyimide, and Rogers. Alumina is a ceramic substance utilized in the fabrication of circuit boards. The size of the printed circuit board is determined by the circuit's design requirements (I.e., length, width, and thickness).
Following material selection, the first step is to apply a thin layer of copper to the whole board to protect it against corrosion. Following that, the circuit layout will be printed onto the circuit board using a photosensitive process. After that, a photo etching method will remove any copper from the board that is not required for the circuit arrangement. The copper that arises from this procedure fabricates the PCB prototype circuit's traces or tracks. To link the circuit traces, two processes are used. A mechanical milling approach will utilize CNC machines to remove any surplus copper from the board during the production process. Following that, sections, where traces are required to stay visible are covered using an etch-resistant silk-screen printing method.
In the PCB manufacturing process, the printed circuit board is nothing more than a collection of copper lines devoid of electrical circuitry. To install the components, holes must be drilled into the board designated for the electrical and electronic components. To generate the holes in the metal, either lasers or a particular Tungsten Carbide drill bit are employed. In any scenario, when the holes are drilled, they are filled with hollow rivets or coated with an electroplating process that creates an electrical connection between the layers of a circuit board. Following that, a masking material is put to the whole PCB, save for the pads and holes, and allowed to dry. Masking materials include lead solder, lead-free solder, OSP (Entek), deep/hard gold (electrolytic nickel gold), immersion gold (electroless nickel gold - ENIG), wire bondable gold (99.99 percent pure gold), immersion silver, immersion tin (white tin), carbon ink, and SN 100CL, a tin, copper, and nickel alloy. The final stage of PCB fabrication is screen printing the board to ensure that the labels and legends appear in their proper locations.
Examining the Construction Quality of the PCB Board
The board must be tested to guarantee proper operation before installing the electrical and electronic components on the printed circuit board. The most typical faults resulting in a faulty PCB are shorts and openings, both possible. A "short" is a link between two or more circuit points that should not exist. An "open" refers to a location where a link should exist but does not. Before constructing the PCB, it is required to correct these problems. Unfortunately, some printed circuit board manufacturers do not test their boards before shipment, which may cause problems when the boards reach the customer's location. As a result, quality control is a critical phase in the PCB manufacturing process. Before component insertion, it is required to verify the printed circuit boards (PCBs) to ensure they are in good working condition.
