The Met, being the third largest museum in the world by visitor numbers, is a must visit location for people visiting New York. Originally founded in 1870 and opened in 1872, The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art of New York City (to give its full title) brings together an awesome range of artefacts and artwork.

What is on view at the Met?

The Met is spread across three locations with the main location being on Fifth Avenue. This location displays over 2 million works with the permanent collection consisting of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings, and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, Byzantine, and Islamic art. The museum is home to encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, costumes, and accessories, as well as antique weapons and armor from around the world. Several notable interiors, ranging from 1st-century Rome through modern American design, are installed in its galleries (Source: Wikipedia).

The museum also hosts events and temporary exhibitions throughout the year so it is worth checking The Met’s Exhibitions and Events pages before visiting to see what is happening at present and whether booking may be required for certain events.

Who is a visit to the Met for?

It would be particularly difficult to find anyone who would not be interested in a wide variety of the exhibits and artefacts in the Met, such is the range on display. However, there are also specific elements which are aimed more at certain demographics such as for kids, teenagers, students, educators, adults and others. Of course those with particular interests in Art, History and Culture will love seeing everything in more detail and depth than the casual visitor but nobody will go away disappointed from the Met.

There is also a shop and café area on site which means you can spend a long time here and refuel with refreshments at any time.

Anything else you should know?

The Met is huge and has a huge range of exhibits on display. For this reason, particularly if your time is limited, it is important to plan your visit to ensure you see things of most interest to you and your group. One way to do this is through a guided museum tour which can be customized to suit your goals and interests and even combined with other sightseeing you may wish to take in during your visit to New York.
