Explore Chinatown, Koreantown and Little Italy in NYC

New York’s diversity can perhaps be best demonstrated by the fact that within the city, various areas are dominated by a particular culture or ethnic group. Of these, perhaps the best know are the Chinese, Korean and Italian areas. These fascinating hives of activity are well worth a visit and not only to sample the best of food!

Chinatown in Manhattan, New York City

Chinatown in lower Manhattan is known for its restaurants, its food shops (especially fresh produce, sea food, ethnic foods), for clothes and shopping. There are also a few Buddhist temples, the Sara Delano Roosevelt Park and of course Columbus Park which is almost like stepping into a Chinese park as it is full of Chinese people playing games, singing and relaxing.

To summarize, Chinatown has lots of crowds, is a lively colorful place to walk; it's loud but a lot of fun.

Koreantown in New York City

Close to Chinatown, Koreatown, or K-Town, is an ethnic Korean enclave in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, centered on West 32nd Street between Madison Avenue and the intersection with Sixth Avenue and Broadway, which is known as Greeley Square.

In this area, many street signs are in both Korean and English and it’s common for stores to have Korean signage. The relatively small area in fact makes this even more like Seoul because businesses are stacked on top of each other rather than exclusively on the ground floor. This leaves very little residential space but you can be sure to always find a large portion of New York’s 140,000 Koreans within the space.

Little Italy in New York City

With a whole range of restaurants across the world choosing this name as their own, it is not surprising that they want to imitate a truly wonderful location full of quality food and Italian delicacies.

Little Italy welcomes a heavily tourist crowd to its high concentration of souvenir shops and traditional Italian eateries and bakeries. Tenement buildings, once home to the immigrants who settled the area in the late 1800s, line the narrow streets. Mulberry Street, the main thoroughfare, turns into a pedestrian mall on summer weekends. The area celebrates its heritage each September at the busy San Gennaro festival.
