Mild steel is the type of carbon steel where it contains very low amounts of carbon. Approximately, it is 0.16–0.29% by weight. This steel is very cheap and most commonly used. It is malleable and ductile but has low tensile strength. Mild carbon cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
Mild steel is the mildest type of seamless carbon steel pipe and has a comparatively low amount of carbon. Mild steel can also have other elements such as manganese, silicon and trace amounts of phosphorous. These additional elements protect the integrity of the structure of metal iron by preventing dislocations within the iron crystals. Carbon acts as a hardening agent, and the percentage of carbon added is directly proportional to the strength of the steel; the strength of steel generally increases with the percentage of carbon added.
Mild steel has very low carbon percentage compared to other carbon steel. Mild steel has high ductility, and it is malleable, whereas other carbon steel types have low ductility. Mild carbon cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but other types of carbon steel can be hardened by heat treatment. Mild steel is less strong and harder than other carbon steel types. Steel surface roughness Ra is usually expressed.
Pipe surface roughness is mainly manifested in the following aspects:Surface roughness of the wear parts. The rougher the surface, with the effective contact surface area between the smaller, the greater the pressure, the faster the wear.
There are some features of MS seamless pipe:
1. Mild steel tubing with seamless is a carbon steel with a carbon content of less than 0.25%. It is also called mild steel because of its low strength, low hardness and softness.
2. The annealed structure of mild steel tubing with seamless is ferrite and a small amount of pearlite, which has low strength and hardness, and good plasticity and toughness.
3. Mild steel tubing with seamless has good cold formability and can be cold formed by crimping, bending, stamping, etc.
4. Mild steel tubing with seamless steel pipe phas good weldability. Easy to accept a variety of processing such as forging, welding and cutting.
Carbon Steel contains about 0.05-1.70% carbon by weight. Increasing the carbon percentage in steel gives it additional strength and it is also considered as the most economical approach of increasing the strength of steel. However, as a result of adding more carbon, the steel also tends to become brittle and less ductile. Therefore, the right balance of carbon has to be added in order to achieve extra performing steel. High Carbon Steel has a Carbon content between 0.3-1.70%, and Low Carbon Steel has a Carbon content 0.05-0.15%. Low Carbon Steel is the most common type of steel used today due to the relatively low manufacturing price.
Seamless carbon pipe is the most commonly used material for process piping. It has the advantage of wide availability, high strength, and a large array of connection possibilities, for example, screwed, socket-welded, and butt-welded. Steel pipe should be selected for the required strength and durability required for the application and the ductility and machinability required to join it and form it into piping spools. The pipe must withstand the pressure, temperature, and corrosion conditions of the application. It is used for liquid, gas, and steam services both above- and below-ground services. It is not recommended for use in corrosive services but may be used in caustic services.
Mild steel is less strong and harder than other carbon steel types.High carbon steel can undergo heat treatment better than low carbon steel and hence is very useful in many applications. Other elemental impurities can also bring quite interesting properties to steel; i.e. Sulphur. Some common applications of high steel carbon include; rail steels, pre-stressed concrete, wire rope, tire reinforcement, knives, saw blades, gear wheels, chains, etc.
