As discussed in our previous blogs, your dental compressor is a vital component of your dental surgery, and getting the wrong one for your needs can have disastrous effects. So, how exactly do you ensure that you choose the right one for you?
Oil-Based Vs Oil-Free?
The argument for oil-free dental compressors is undeniable – particularly within the dental industry. By removing the risk of oil contamination they drastically reduce health & safety issues facing your patients and general office environment. Although the maintenance needs and noise levels are slightly higher than with oil-lubricated alternatives, the benefit in terms of to the patient and the dentist far outweigh these factors.
Once this has been decided, consider the tools you will be using it with and how many you will be using at one time. Will you be using 1 handpiece every so often, or will you have multiple handpieces requiring a constant flow of air?
Your answer to this will determine the specification that your Dental Compressor must have. Including…
How much Power do you need?
Every compressor has a pump which is responsible for compressing the air. The pump can range in power (rated in kilowatts (Kw) or Horsepower (HP)), and will directly impact the compressor’s output performance. You will need to consider how powerful you need your pump to be.
How much Pressure do you need?
Your tools require a minimum amount of pressure to function properly, measured in BAR. If your Dental Compressor does not produce enough pressure, your tools will not perform effectively – so carefully consider how much pressure you need. 5 bar is typical for dental applications, but ensure that the pressure is available at the point of use, allowing for any pressure drop across pipework and filtration fitted.
What Tank Size do you need?
The tank volume (measured in Litres) shows how much air your compressor can store at one time. This will also determine how long you can run before your compressor needs to replenish it’s tank. Don’t forget that tank volume will also determine the physical dimensions, so consider how much storage space you can allow within your office!
How many “motors” do you need?
Dental compressors have “motors” with each one containing one or more pistons. Some models use a single motor while others use multiple. Assuming equal quality of two machines, the machine with more moving parts (motors) has a greater chance of failure.
While it is possible to make general recommendations and suggestions, everyone has unique individual needs, preferences and budgets to take into consideration. If you have any further questions, or would like to discuss your ideas, get in touch with one of our expert technicians.
