Mosquitoes have been alongside us for millions of years. To be precise, the earliest known fossil of a mosquito that has been excavated is 79 million years old from the Cretaceous period within Canadian amber. Human beings have only been on this planet for 2.5 million years. So, mosquitoes are ruling this earth for more than 70 million years before we even came into existence. Saying a permanent goodbye to these irksome creatures might not be possible for a long time.

Now we all know that mosquitoes are annoying as well as quite dangerous. They are dangerous because they can spread various deadly diseases like malaria, yellow fever, chikungunya, dengue, and many more.  Mosquitoes are never understood properly. They have always been hated or feared by most people. It’s true that they spread numerous diseases and can be pretty annoying with their buzzing noise around us but some knowledge of these pesky creatures can come a long way in handling them properly.   1. More than one million people are killed annually by mosquitoes – distributing and spreading diseases is one of the best things that mosquitoes do. They suck their victims’ blood and if the person is already infected with diseases like filariasis, dengue, yellow fever, malaria, encephalitis, etc. and when the mosquito starts to feed on some other victim then that infected blood gets transferred to that person. This way millions are killed annually.
  2. Mosquitoes pose a health risk to pets too – Not only human beings but mosquitoes are also attracted to your pets as well. Studies have shown that mosquitoes transmit heartworm infections in dogs and cats. When a mosquito feeds on an infected animal they suck in the microfilaria or also called heartworm larvae. The heartworm larvae mature within 3-4 months and if remain undetected in the body can damage the lungs and major arteries in your pet’s body.
  3. Mosquitoes enjoy all kinds of food even from garbage – Mosquitoes breed in dirty places and also feed from any place they like. They can feed on fruits in your kitchen or on the tree itself. They can feed on juice or even from garbage cans. So remain alert when a mosquito is biting you because it might be transmitting harmful bacteria from the trash that they had their last meal in or dirty water that they drank from.
  4. Women are more prone to mosquitoes than men – it’s an interesting fact that mosquitoes are more attracted to bite women than men. Great news for men but it’s true. Studies show that this is because the estrogen level in women is higher which they get more attractive.
  5. Mosquitoes have assassinated more people than any war in the world – Can you believe it? But it is a fact. Even the bloodiest battles in the entire history of mankind have seen less death tolls than death due to mosquitoes.
  6. Reproduction of mosquitoes is in millions per week worldwide – A single female can lay up to 100 to 300 eggs in a single fertility. In her entire life, an adult female mosquito lays more than 1000 to 3000 eggs. With so many females and single females reaching numbers thousand just imagine how many mosquitoes are reproduced weekly.
  7. Only the female mosquitoes suck your blood – Yes, only the females need blood for their diets. The males feed on fruits, juice, nectar, and other things.
  8. Females need protein from our blood – Adult female mosquitoes suck our blood because they need two things for feeding their eggs. They get the protein from our blood and feed on nectar for sugar content.
  9. Mosquitoes have very poor eyesight – Did you know that mosquitoes can’t see anything? They have very poor eyesight and detect their victims by heat sensors. People living in hotter climates are more infected by mosquitoes than people living in colder regions.
  10. Dark clothes attract more mosquitoes – As mosquitoes have bad eyesight, it becomes easier to see a big dark blur, than lighter shades. So, in case you are in mosquito-prone areas avoid wearing dark shade clothes.
