Holistic Homeschooling Approach to Education | HomeSchoolToGo

There are many reasons why homeschooling is becoming more popular, and many people see it as a complete way to learn. It's also great for families who aren't afraid to question the "experts" and take charge of their well-being and the future.

Benefits of Holistic Homeschooling

Children learn better when they are in a place where they feel safe and have a teacher with whom they have a close relationship. As you can see, having a loving parent teach you at home makes sense. As a homeschooler, you can slow down or speed up the pace of your lessons to avoid both confusion and boredom. As with learning to roll over, stand up, or walk, there is no magic age for reading, adding, or multiplying. On the other hand, conventional schools usually make kids learn these things at the same age or give them labels that could hurt their self-esteem for life. But children who are forced to learn to read before they are ready often have a hard time reading for years and may never enjoy reading. Children who learn to read later in life usually catch up to their peers' reading level in a few months. Because reading improves abstract thinking, imagination, writing and communication skills, vocabulary, and learning about a wide range of topics, a child who likes to read has a decisive edge.

Dedicated Teaching Attention

Individual instruction takes only a tiny fraction of the time that classroom instruction does. This leaves children with time for free play, which is an essential part of healthy childhood development because children learn more from activities they start. These things help homeschooled kids build self-esteem and learn new skills that will help them when they grow up and live and work in the real world as adults. Many homeschoolers are doing things like growing food, making things with wood, learning how to be a political candidate or musician. They also volunteer at their church or a charity or even start their own business every day. Experiences like this are bound to make kids and adults mature, responsible, and excited about giving back to their communities.

Individual Classes

Each child can get a different type of education at home. Children learn better when they are interested in the subject or see how it applies to real life. A homeschooler can also change books and programs if they don't work well for a child. A traditional classroom teacher can't do this because there are 20 or 30 kids in her class.

As a result, holistic homeschooling teaches families not to trust the experts blindly but to be in charge of their own lives, not just when it comes to education but also when it comes to other parts of their lives. As soon as a family decides to educate their kids at home, they become more willing to start other things at home. Some homeschoolers are now growing their food, raising chickens or bees, making their soaps or candles, baking from scratch, and using herbs, essential oils, and other natural remedies for minor pains and illnesses. This is a trend that is becoming more and more common. There are times when homeschoolers start doing these kinds of things for educational reasons, like when they begin to like gardening or making candles. People who have only one parent working outside the house might learn how to make their toothpaste, shampoos, or detergents because they don't have much money. However, the experience of holistic homeschooling, which shows how holistic homeschooling learning is better than traditional, one-size-fits-all classroom education, quickly leads a family to think about what other things they could do well. Because both foster an individual, holistic homeschooling approach, taking charge of one's health and holistic homeschooling go well together. Learning how to help the body heal itself is also educational for everyone!

Unfortunately, many families are afraid of holistic homeschooling because they think it costs a lot of money, is hard to do well in school, or takes a lot of time. Take it easy. In 2009, the National Home Education Research Institute did a study and found that homeschoolers always did better on standardized tests than students who traditionally went to school, no matter what their parents' education level was or how much money they made.

Styles of Homeschooling

People interested in homeschooling can look into different homeschooling styles to find one they like. The techniques below are some of the most popular, but many more.

Charlotte Mason-style homeschooling

This means that living books, not textbooks, should be used, and nature walks with nature notebooks for sketches and notes in the afternoons instead of work in the mornings.

Unschooling

It's also called child-led education when kids start their own learning experiences. It was made famous by John Holt, an educator who thought that kids could learn what they needed to know, just like how a child learns to walk and talk with the help, but no formal teaching, of their parents.

Relaxed homeschooling

In this style, parents set rules but let their kids decide about books, educational games, and activities. They try to make lessons unique for each child's interests and needs.

Unit studies

The holistic homeschooling family picks a single subject and applies it to them. A child interested in baseball could study how baseball has changed history and vice versa, do math with baseball statistics, read and analyze literature about baseball, and examine the science of different pitches, for example.

When it comes down to it, holistic homeschooling is just an extension of being a parent, not taking on a new role as a teacher. Books and science kits aren't necessary. You don't need to be an academic genius or have advanced degrees or a perfectly organized home. All you need is an intense desire and a lot of love.
