Process Behind Stainless Steel Laser Cutting

by National Stainless Steel Centre on May 11, 2023 Business 65 Views

Working with stainless steel calls for precision that manual cutting methods often fail to deliver. This is why innovative technology is often used for metalwork, with stainless steel laser cutting being one of the best options available. Builders and engineers prefer this method because it allows for precise cutting, etching, and customisation of stainless steel. The laser cutting process is reliable and ensures accurate results, even when dealing with highly complex shapes and contours. As a result, it is commonly used in a variety of fields, including industrial manufacturing.

Why use laser cutting?

Using laser cutting ensures stainless steel that is cut and finished to your specifications, down to the smallest detail. It delivers perfectly smooth cuts and holes without jagged edges and other imperfections that may affect the quality of your project. Laser technology makes it easier to reproduce precise cuts on multiple components since the process is programmed in a computer and fully automated.

How does laser cutting work?

To understand stainless steel laser cutting, it’s crucial to know what the technology does.  Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) uses a light oscillator aimed precisely at a small diameter that’s less than 1mm, and it cuts using a thermal process via the laser source, which generates the laser beam through a mirror. Then, the action occurs in the equipment’s cutter head to focus on the small point of a tiny diameter.

As a thermal process, laser cutting heats and focuses a laser beam that’s up to 104 Wmm2 dense. Depending on the project, it may be combined with an inert or active gas. Although the process is called ‘cutting,’ the laser actually melts the stainless steel material being sliced. Then, the gas removes the liquefied metal.

Capabilities

Stainless steel laser cutting drills a hole into the material for a few seconds, depending on the metal’s thickness. Technicians carefully choose the size of the laser beam to match the thickness from 1.5mm to 12.5mm. Service providers use state-of-the-art laser cutting machines to increase their capabilities from 0.5mm to 25mm. Plus, they have fully automated sheet-loading machines that can handle 6m x 2m plate sizes and high-volume runs.
