Renewable Energy in India: The Role of Government Policies

by Hemant Kumar on May 16, 2023 Business 344 Views

With the growing concerns about climate change, the adoption of renewable energy has become increasingly important. In India, the government has been playing a significant role in promoting the adoption of renewable energy. According to Invest India, India’s installed renewable energy capacity has increased 396% in the last 8.5 years and stands at more than 174.53 Giga Watts (including large Hydro), which is about 42.5% of the country’s total capacity (as of February 2023). In this blog post, we will discuss the role of government policies in promoting renewable energy adoption in India.

Historical Overview of Renewable Energy Policies in India
India has a long history of promoting renewable energy adoption through various policies and initiatives. The first policy related to renewable energy was introduced in 1985 when the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources was established. Since then, several policies have been introduced to promote renewable energy adoption in India.

Current Government Policies Promoting Renewable Energy Adoption in India
The government of India has set targets to reduce India’s total projected carbon emission by 1 billion tonnes by 2030, reduce the carbon intensity of the nation’s economy by less than 45% by the end of the decade, achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and expand India’s renewable energy installed capacity to 500 GW by 2030. To achieve these targets, several policies and initiatives have been introduced by the government.

One such initiative is the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) mechanism
This is a market-based instrument to promote renewable energy and facilitate the compliance of renewable purchase obligations (RPO). The government has also introduced several other policies such as National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy, National Offshore Wind Policy, and more.

Analysis of their impact on renewable energy adoption & Renewable energy providers like AMP Energy India
The current policies and initiatives have had a significant impact on renewable energy adoption in India. According to Invest India, India saw the highest year on year growth in renewable energy additions of 9.83% in 2022.

The installed capacity of renewable energy has increased from 14.7 GW in 2010 to 97.66 GW in 2021. The government's policies have created a favorable environment for renewable energy companies to invest in India. One such company is AMP Energy India, a leading renewable energy company in India. AMP Energy India has been actively involved in the development of renewable energy projects in the country. The company has a diverse portfolio of projects that includes solar, wind, and hybrid projects. Amp has a diversified portfolio of 2.5GW+ of renewable energy assets across 15 states in India.

Discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of current policies
While the current policies have been successful in promoting renewable energy adoption in India, there are still several challenges that need to be addressed. One such challenge is the lack of adequate infrastructure for renewable energy generation and distribution. The government needs to invest more in infrastructure development to ensure that renewable energy can be generated and distributed efficiently.

Future Prospects for Government Policies and Renewable Energy Adoption in India
The future prospects for government policies and renewable energy adoption in India are promising. The government has set ambitious targets for expanding India’s renewable energy installed capacity to 500 GW by 2030. With continued investment in infrastructure development and policy initiatives, it is likely that these targets will be achieved.

Government policies have played a crucial role in promoting renewable energy adoption in India. While there are still several challenges that need to be addressed, the future prospects for renewable energy adoption in India are promising.
