Welded steel pipe refers to a steel pipe with seams on the surface that is welded after bending and deforming a steel strip or steel plate into a circular, square or other shape. The blanks used for welded steel pipes are steel plates or strips. With the rapid development of continuous rolling production of high-quality strip steel and the advancement of welding and inspection technology, the quality of welds has been continuously improved, and the varieties and specifications of welded steel pipes have increased day by day, and seamless pipes have been replaced in more and more fields. Welded steel pipes have lower cost and higher production efficiency than seamless steel pipes. In consideration of finished products and other factors, engineering contractors will choose to replace seamless pipes with seamless ERW pipes.
Welding skills required for welding steel pipes depend on the specific welding process used. Here are some common welding skills applicable to welded steel pipes:
1.Welding process knowledge: Different welding processes can be used to weld steel pipes, such as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). Understanding the principles, advantages, and limitations of each process is essential for selecting the appropriate method for welding steel pipes.
2.Joint preparation: Proper joint preparation is crucial for achieving strong and defect-free welds in steel pipes. This includes cleaning the pipe surfaces to remove contaminants, ensuring precise fit-up and alignment of the pipe ends, and beveling or chamfering the pipe edges to the required specifications. Skills in measuring, cutting, grinding, and fitting the pipe joints accurately are necessary.
3.Welding parameter control: Controlling welding parameters is vital for achieving quality welds in steel pipes. Parameters such as welding current, voltage, travel speed, electrode or wire feed rate, shielding gas flow rate, and preheating temperature (if required) must be appropriately set and adjusted based on the pipe material, wall thickness, joint design, and welding process being used.
4.Arc control and manipulation: The ability to control the welding arc is crucial for maintaining proper penetration, heat input, and weld bead shape. Skills in maintaining a stable arc length, controlling the welding angle, and manipulating the electrode or welding gun to ensure even and consistent heat distribution are important for producing sound welds.
5.Joint filling and reinforcement: Welding steel pipes often involves making multiple passes to achieve the required weld size, strength, and reinforcement. Skills in depositing successive weld beads with proper overlap, ensuring good fusion between the passes, and controlling the amount of filler metal added are necessary to create structurally sound and uniform welds.
6.Heat management and distortion control: Steel pipes are susceptible to heat distortion during welding due to the high thermal conductivity of the material. Skillful heat management techniques, such as using proper welding techniques to control the heat input, employing preheating or post-weld heat treatment (if required), and implementing welding sequence strategies, can help minimize distortion and maintain dimensional stability.
7.Weld quality inspection: Welders should be familiar with various quality inspection methods, such as visual inspection, liquid penetrant testing, radiographic testing, or ultrasonic testing, to evaluate the integrity of the welds in steel pipes. Skills in interpreting and identifying welding defects, such as cracks, lack of fusion, or excessive porosity, are essential for ensuring the quality of the welded joints.
It is important for welders to receive proper training, practice their skills, and follow industry standards and best practices to develop the necessary welding skills for welding steel pipes successfully. Additionally, maintaining knowledge of the specific requirements and codes applicable to the project, such as welding procedures and qualifications, is crucial for meeting the desired standards and specifications.
