What is a well casing pipe?

Well casing pipe is a steel pipe used to support the well wall of oil and gas wells to ensure the normal operation of the entire oil well during the drilling process and after completion. Well casing pipe follows the standard API 5CT standard.

Well casing pipe is the lifeline to maintain the operation of oil wells. Due to different geological conditions, the downhole stress state is complex, and the combined effects of tension, compression, bending, and torsion stresses place higher requirements on the quality of the casing itself. Once the well casing pipe itself is damaged for some reason, it may lead to a decrease in production or even the scrapping of the entire well.

Steel casing pipes require corrosion resistance in corrosive environments. In places with complex geological conditions, the casing is also required to have compression resistance. Therefore, in order to ensure the quality of well casing pipe, the produced oil casing must be inspected.

Testing method of steel casing

1.Ray detection

Radiographic testing uses the difference in the amount of radiation transmitted through normal parts and defective parts to form a difference in blackness on the film.

2.Magnetic particle testing

Magnetic particle testing uses magnetic flux leakage at the defect to absorb magnetic particles and form magnetic marks to provide defect display. It can detect surface and sub-surface defects of oil casing, and the nature of the defect is easy to identify.

3. Penetration test

Penetration testing uses the capillary effect of liquid to enter the penetrating liquid into the defective opening on the surface of the solid material, and then uses the developer to suck the penetrating liquid out to the surface to reveal the presence of defects.

4. Magnetic flux leakage detection

Magnetic flux leakage detection of oil casing is based on the high magnetic permeability characteristics of ferromagnetic materials. It detects the quality of in-service oil casings by measuring the magnetic permeability caused by defects in ferromagnetic materials.

5. Eddy current testing

Eddy current testing mainly uses the eddy currents induced by ferromagnetic coils in the workpiece to analyze the internal quality of the oil casing workpiece. It can detect surface and near-surface defects of various conductive materials, and it is usually difficult to control parameters.

6. Magnetic recall test

Magnetic memory detection is derived from the relationship between the physical nature of metal's magnetic phenomena and the dislocation process. It has many advantages such as high efficiency, low cost, and no need for polishing, and has important application prospects in industry.

7. Ultrasonic testing

When ultrasonic waves propagate in the material to be tested, changes in the material's acoustic properties and internal structure have a specific impact on the propagation of ultrasonic waves. By exploring the degree and condition of the impact of ultrasonic waves, we can understand the changes in the performance and structure of petroleum casing products.
