Heat Treatment Defects of 304 Stainless Steel Pipes

The heat treatment of 304 stainless steel pipes mainly includes heating, heat preservation and cooling. It can improve the mechanical properties and processing properties of the steel pipe. Common heat treatment methods include annealing (reducing hardness and improving processing properties) and quenching (increasing hardness, but the quenching effect of 304 stainless steel is limited). However, due to the characteristics of 304 stainless steel itself, the heat treatment process requires delicate operation to avoid affecting its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. But occasionally, some defects are found in the heat treated materials.

What causes material defects in heat treatment?

1. Overheating

When the material is kept at high temperature for too long or the temperature is too high during the heating process, the austenite grains will coarsen. This phenomenon is also called overheating, which will directly lead to a decrease in the toughness of the material. The higher the temperature, the greater the brittleness, and it is easier to deform or crack during quenching.

2. Decarburization and oxidation

Decarburization is mainly because the carbon on the surface of the steel reacts with hydrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide when heated. Decarburization will greatly reduce the surface hardness and wear resistance after quenching and cause cracks. The oxidation phenomenon is formed by the oxidation reaction of iron or alloy materials on the surface of the material and the medium.

3. Overburning

Overburning is the most serious of all heat treatment defects. Overheated materials cannot be repaired and can only be discarded. The main reason is also that the heating temperature is too high, resulting in local grain boundary oxidation and melting.

Control measures for heat treatment deformation of 304 stainless steel pipes

1. Reasonable quenching

In the heat treatment process of stainless steel pipes, quenching is the core content and will have a direct impact on deformation. In the actual heat treatment process, attention should be paid to process technology innovation to reduce the quenching error rate. Once the quenching medium is unreasonable, it is easy to cause serious imbalance of stress in the material, leading to deformation problems. As for the quenching medium, it mainly includes water and oil, so attention should be paid to temperature control to reduce the probability of heat treatment deformation.

Generally, the water temperature and oil temperature are controlled between 55°C-65°C and 60°C-80°C respectively to ensure a reasonable quenching speed, improve the cooling effect, and ensure that the heat treatment deformation of the 304 stainless steel pipe is significantly reduced.

2. Reasonable processing

The application of heat treatment technology is inseparable from the use of mechanical equipment: when processing with mechanical equipment, the thermal deformation of stainless steel pipes should be considered for reasonable processing and effectively increase the qualified rate of products after quenching. Technicians should correctly understand the deformation laws of various steel pipes and take corresponding heat treatment measures to ensure the correct implementation of pipe heat treatment. By estimating the heat treatment deformation value of the material, the heat treatment deformation can be reduced.

3. Scientific cooling

During the heat treatment process, it is necessary to adopt targeted cooling methods according to the specific properties of the pipe to ensure the scientific nature of the cooling, thereby effectively controlling the deformation. Single medium quenching, double medium quenching, graded quenching and isothermal quenching are commonly used heat treatment methods for metal pipes.
