Corrosion Resistance Competition of Seamless Pipes for Water Transport

by Jane Tian on Feb 13, 2025 Business 39 Views

In water supply projects, seamless steel pipes can be seen everywhere. Seamless steel pipes of different materials have different properties. When choosing seamless steel pipes for water supply with excellent corrosion resistance, the choice of material is crucial. Different materials have different corrosion resistance performance in different environments. Common ones are carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel.

Common water supply seamless steel pipe materials

Seamless carbon steel pipe: It is the most common type, the main components are iron and carbon, and also contain small amounts of silicon, manganese and other elements. It has low cost, mature technology, good comprehensive mechanical properties, can withstand certain pressure and impact, and is widely used in construction, machinery manufacturing and other fields. However, its corrosion resistance is average and its service life is limited in corrosive water delivery environments.

Alloy seamless steel pipe: Adding alloy elements such as chromium, nickel, and molybdenum to carbon steel significantly improves the strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance of the steel pipe. However, the addition of alloy elements also increases costs and processing difficulty.

Stainless steel seamless pipe: Due to the addition of a large amount of chromium and nickel elements, it has excellent corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, and can maintain stable performance in various harsh environments. At the same time, it also has good weldability and surface finish, beautiful and easy to clean.

"Corrosion Resistance Competition" of Seamless Steel Pipes

1. Stainless steel seamless pipe (such as 304, 316, etc.)

Common stainless steel materials include 304, 316, 316L, etc. Stainless steel is relatively expensive, especially 316/316L stainless steel, which is relatively expensive and is suitable for occasions with higher requirements.

304 stainless steel: has good corrosion resistance and can resist corrosion in most household and industrial environments. It is suitable for mild environments (such as tap water and general industrial water). It can resist most oxidizing media and corrosive environments.

316 stainless steel: Compared with 304, 316 stainless steel contains more molybdenum (Mo) elements, which can significantly improve corrosion resistance, especially the ability to resist chloride corrosion. It is suitable for water treatment systems in seawater, acidic or alkaline media. It performs well in highly corrosive environments, such as seawater or water containing chloride ions.

316L stainless steel: It is a low-carbon 316 stainless steel with stronger corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance, suitable for applications with higher requirements, such as seawater or strong acid and alkali environments.

2. Alloy seamless steel pipe

Cr-Mo alloy steel: This alloy steel (15CrMoG alloy pipe) has strong corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance, and is suitable for water delivery systems with high temperature and high pressure and containing corrosive substances.

Ni-Cr alloy steel: has strong anti-oxidation and corrosion resistance, and is especially suitable for environments that need to withstand high temperatures or highly corrosive media.

It has excellent high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance, and is suitable for harsh working environments, especially high pressure, hot water or chemical transportation. Alloy steel is expensive and complex to process, and is not suitable for general water transportation.

3. Galvanized steel pipe

Hot-dip galvanized steel pipe: After hot-dip galvanizing treatment, a dense zinc layer is formed on the surface, which has a good protective effect against oxides and corrosive substances in water.

Electrogalvanized steel pipe: A zinc layer is coated on the surface of the steel pipe by electroplating. Although its anti-corrosion ability is weaker than hot-dip galvanizing, it also has a certain protective effect on low-corrosive water.

The price is relatively low and is suitable for general tap water pipes and low-corrosion environments. In strong acid, strong alkali or high temperature environment, the galvanized layer is easily corroded, and the life of galvanized pipes is short, and they are generally not suitable for long-term exposure to strong corrosive environments.

4. Coated steel pipe (such as epoxy coated steel pipe)

Epoxy coated steel pipe is a steel pipe with epoxy resin coating applied to the inner and outer surfaces to enhance its corrosion resistance. Coated steel pipe is commonly used in water supply, sewage, natural gas and other fields.

Coated pipes are moderately expensive and highly corrosion resistant, making them suitable for most water environments. he coating may peel or age over time and may need to be reapplied after extended use.

5. Cast iron pipe

Cast iron pipes are usually made of ductile iron or gray cast iron. Although they are not as corrosion-resistant as stainless steel or alloy steel, they are still widely used in some environments with simpler water quality. In certain corrosive water environments, cast iron pipes are prone to corrosion, have a shorter lifespan, and require regular inspection and replacement.

Conclusion

If extremely high corrosion resistance is required, such as seawater, acidic and alkaline water or chlorinated water, choose 316 stainless steel or 316L stainless steel pipe. For general tap water or industrial water transportation, 304 stainless steel pipes can be selected, which have good corrosion resistance and low cost. If the transportation environment requires resistance to high temperature and high pressure or is highly corrosive, alloy steel (such as Cr-Mo alloy steel, Ni-Cr alloy steel) is a better choice. In general water supply systems, galvanized steel pipes or coated steel pipes (such as epoxy coated steel pipes) can also provide better anti-corrosion protection and are cost-effective.
