They are formulated to preserve the protection of the embedded reinforcing steel from corrosion, which is a principal reason for structure failure. By generating a protective barrier around the steel or changing the chemical climate within the concrete, corrosion inhibitors greatly improve the service life of reinforced structures.

Shrinkage-reducing and expansive additives are also useful, particularly in heavy slabs and industrial floors. These assist in minimizing drying shrinkage cracking, thus avoiding openings for water and deleterious chemicals to penetrate into the concrete.
