Welding Methods and Precautions

There are two main methods commonly used for welding carbon steel pipes. Each method has its own unique characteristics, and the choice should be based on the specific situation.

1. Spot Welding

Spot welding is commonly used for small-diameter carbon steel pipes. When welding, start from the top of the smaller pipe and weld point by point, ensuring tight pressure on the reservoir to avoid sand holes. During welding, maintain a steady hand, observe the weld bead clearly, and maintain a consistent speed and rhythm.

2. Continuous Arc Welding

Continuous arc welding is a more suitable option for large-diameter carbon steel pipes. Because spot welding of large-diameter pipes is time-consuming, continuous arc welding is the preferred method. It is typically welded from the bottom up. Initially, a spot weld is performed to create a base layer, but the base layer should be kept to a minimum thickness to allow for subsequent top-covering. Regarding current adjustment, the current for continuous arc welding should be slightly lower than that for spot welding, typically around 40 to 50 volts. Current adjustment should be based on the thickness of the material. Furthermore, welding should be performed in an oscillating motion from the bottom up.

3. The Importance of Current Adjustment
Current adjustment is crucial during the welding process. Welders need to experiment repeatedly before welding to find a current setting they are comfortable with. Only with the right current can they ensure satisfactory welds.

4. Welding Posture and Techniques
Flat welding is the foundation of welding. The key is to position the electrode in the center of the welding handle and move it evenly at a 90-degree angle. This ensures a smooth, flat weld of high quality.

When welding overhead, the key lies in spot welding technique. Apply pressure one point at a time while paying attention to the changes in the weld pool. Although burns are inevitable, they can be avoided with practice.

Vertical welding, similar to pipe welding, can be done with either continuous arc welding or spot welding. Spot welding is recommended, requiring patience and a slow speed. After each welding, carefully remove the coating from the joint.

To be an excellent welder, you must continuously learn and practice, diligently reflect and focus on practical application, to master various welding techniques. At the same time, he also needs to adjust the appropriate current according to different welding requirements to ensure that every weld can achieve perfect results.
