Why is A36 suitable for manufacturing ERW welded pipe?

ASTM A36 Electric resistance welded pipe (ERW) is one of the most common and economical pipe types in the construction, structural, and general manufacturing industries. ASTM A36 is an American Society for Testing and Materials standard that primarily covers carbon structural steel plates, profiles, and bars.

Key Properties:
Strength: Yield strength is approximately 250 MPa (36,000 psi), and tensile strength is approximately 400-550 MPa.

Composition: It is a low-carbon steel, with a carbon content typically not exceeding 0.26%, which gives it excellent weldability.

Ductile: It has good ductility and toughness.

Why is A36 suitable for manufacturing ERW welded pipe?

1. Excellent Weldability:

ERW (Electrical Resistance Welding) technology relies on the material's own resistance to generate heat for fusion. A36's low carbon content makes it less prone to the formation of hard and brittle phases in the weld area during high-speed welding, thus enabling the production of high-quality, strong welds. This is the primary reason it has become the preferred material for ERW piping.

2. Good Formability
In the ERW production process, the steel strip needs to be cold-bent into a circle through a series of rollers. A36 steel has sufficient ductility to smoothly complete this forming process without cracking.

3. Cost-Effectiveness
A36 is a widely available and relatively inexpensive steel, making the final ERW pipe product highly price-competitive in the market.

4. Sufficient Strength
For many structural and non-pressure piping applications, A36 provides sufficient strength.

Main Applications of A36 ERW Welded Pipe:

A36 ERW welded pipe is typically manufactured and certified according to ASTM A500 standards (Structural Carbon Cold-Formed Round and Shaped Tubes), a common standard for structural applications. Its main applications include:

1. Building Structures: As load-bearing components such as columns and beams in buildings, factories, and stadiums.

2. Machinery Manufacturing: Used for machine frames, guardrails, conveyor rails, etc.

3. General Structural Applications: Scaffolding, handrails, fences, various supports and frames.

4. Agricultural Equipment: Used to manufacture structural components for tractors, harvesters, etc.

Important Limitations and Precautions:

Although A36 can be used to manufacture ERW pipe, its limitations must be understood when selecting it:

1. Not suitable for pressurized fluid transportation

A36 ERW pipe cannot be used to transport pressurized fluids such as water, gas, and steam.

The standards for pressurized piping are ASTM A53 or ASTM A135, which have stricter requirements for the chemical composition, mechanical properties, and testing of materials.

2. Material Standard Conversion

When using A36 steel strip to produce ERW welded pipe, the final pipe product is usually no longer called "A36 pipe," but is classified under the corresponding pipe standard according to its application and shape, the most common being ASTM A500 Grade B.
