How to prevent downhole corrosion in oil well casing?

Preventing downhole corrosion in oil well casing requires attention to three aspects: material selection, anti-corrosion treatment, and operating condition control. This reduces the impact of corrosive media and ensures the integrity of the casing.

First, select corrosion-resistant materials. Choose the appropriate steel grade based on the downhole medium:

1. For sulfur-containing oil and gas wells (hydrogen sulfide partial pressure ≥ 0.07 MPa), choose sulfur-resistant casing (such as 9Cr, 13Cr martensitic stainless steel, or 22Cr duplex steel to prevent sulfide stress corrosion cracking);

2. For wells with high water cut and high chloride ion content (chloride ion content ≥ 10000 mg/L), choose corrosion-resistant alloy casing (such as 825 alloy or C276 alloy to resist electrochemical corrosion);

3. For conventional oil and gas wells, choose coated casing (such as an outer 3PE anti-corrosion coating and an inner epoxy resin coating to isolate corrosive media).

Strengthen corrosion prevention and maintenance:

1. Apply special thread-locking grease (such as anti-sulfur thread-locking grease or high-temperature thread-locking grease) before running the casing into the well to fill the thread gaps and prevent media intrusion;

2. Ensure the quality of cement slurry during cementing (cement slurry should be returned to the designed level to avoid exposing the casing to corrosive media; anti-channeling agents should be added to the cement slurry to reduce annular channeling);

3. Periodically inject corrosion inhibitors into the casing (e.g., in sulfur-containing wells, inject imidazoline corrosion inhibitors at a concentration of 50-100 ppm to form a protective film to inhibit corrosion);

4. For wells that have been out of production for a long time, inject a protective fluid (such as a mixture of diesel fuel and corrosion inhibitor to fill the casing cavity and isolate it from air and water).

Controlling downhole operating parameters:

Avoid excessive temperature and pressure operation of the casing (temperature should not exceed the rated withstand temperature of the casing, e.g., the withstand temperature of P110 casing ≤120℃; pressure should not exceed 80% of its crush resistance strength);

Control the water cut of oil and gas wells (through water control production technology, keep the water cut below 80% to reduce water-mediated corrosion);

Avoid frequent well opening and closing (reduce fatigue corrosion caused by pressure fluctuations; adjust pressure slowly during well opening and closing, with a pressure change rate ≤0.5MPa/min).

Through the combined use of multiple measures, the downhole corrosion rate of oil casing can be effectively reduced, extending its service life.
