ASTM A53 is a steel pipe standard used for piping systems, while ASTM A153 and ASTM A123 are hot-dip galvanizing coating standards used to protect steel components from corrosion. Common Misunderstandings
In industrial piping and steel standards, ASTM A53, ASTM A153, and ASTM A123 are often confused because they are used in related construction and steel applications. However, they serve completely different engineering purposes.
A53 is NOT a coating standard
ASTM A53 is a carbon steel pipe specification, not a coating standard. It defines:
- Pipe material (carbon steel)
- Manufacturing type (seamless or ERW)
- Dimensions (NPS, wall thickness, SCH 40 / SCH 80)
- Mechanical and pressure-related properties
It does not define zinc coating or galvanizing requirements.
A153 is NOT a pipe standard
ASTM A153 is a hot-dip galvanizing coating standard, not a pipe specification. It applies to:
- Bolts
- Nuts
- Washers
- Small steel hardware
Its purpose is to specify zinc coating thickness and corrosion protection, not pipe dimensions or pressure ratings.
