1. Inspect the Surface Finish
Start with the surface — it’s the fastest way to spot obvious manufacturing or handling problems, and it doesn’t require any equipment. A clean, smooth finish is usually a good sign; visible flaws can point to bigger issues with corrosion resistance or machining accuracy down the line.
During a visual inspection, check the entire length of the tube for the following defects:
Surface cracks or fine fractures
Scratches and scoring
Rust or corrosion
Dents or deformation
Folds or laps
Scale or oxidation marks
Pay particular attention to the tube ends and areas where handling damage is most likely to occur. Minor surface marks that do not affect dimensions or performance may be acceptable, but cracks, heavy corrosion, deep scratches, or folds should generally be considered unacceptable unless permitted by the applicable standard or customer specification.
2. Verify Dimensional Accuracy
Dimensional inspection confirms whether the delivered cold drawn seamless steel tubes meet the tolerances specified in the purchase order or applicable standards. Use calibrated measuring instruments to check critical dimensions before the products are accepted.
The inspection should include:
Outside diameter (OD)
Wall thickness (WT)
Length
Straightness
Roundness (Ovality)
Dimensions that fall outside the specified tolerance may lead to machining difficulties, poor sealing performance, or installation problems, particularly in hydraulic cylinders, precision machinery, and automotive applications where accuracy is critical.
3. Review Mechanical Properties
Mechanical property verification helps confirm that the steel tube is suitable for its intended application. Buyers should compare the test results provided by the supplier with the requirements specified in the purchase order or applicable material standard.
Key properties include:
tensile strength
Yield strength
Elongation
Hardness (when required)
These figures should appear on the Mill Test Certificate and be checked against the relevant standard — ASTM, EN, DIN, or whatever the purchase order specifies.
Verifying mechanical properties is particularly important for tubes used in pressure service, precision machining, bending, or structural applications, where insufficient strength or ductility may affect long-term performance.
4. Check Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Reports
Visual inspection alone cannot detect internal defects. For critical applications, suppliers should provide non-destructive testing (NDT) records when required.
Common inspection methods include:
| Method | What It Checks |
| Ultrasonic Testing (UT) |
Internal cracks, inclusions, laminations; also used to verify wall thickness |
| Eddy Current Testing (ET) |
Surface and near-surface defects; fast, suited for high-volume screening |
| Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) |
Surface and near-surface cracks on ferromagnetic tube grades only |
| Hydrostatic Testing |
Overall pressure-holding integrity of the finished tube |
The required inspection method depends on the application, industry standards, and customer specifications.
5. Verify the Mill Test Certificate (MTC)
The Mill Test Certificate (MTC) provides documented evidence that the cold drawn seamless steel tubes have been manufactured and tested in accordance with the specified standard. Before accepting a shipment, buyers should verify that the information in the MTC matches the delivered products.
A typical MTC includes:
Material grade
Heat number
Chemical composition
mechanical properties
Product dimensions
Applicable standard
Inspection and test results
The heat number shown on the certificate should match the markings on the steel tubes to ensure full material traceability throughout manufacturing, storage, and installation.
