It’s something that we all know, but few of us actually manage to achieve. In order to enhance our physical progress, see improvements in muscle mass gains, and enhance our recovery, it’s paramount to boost our daily protein intake, and ensure that our body benefits from the BCAAs required for building muscle and keeping our energy levels at an optimum level.
Are you trying to improve your physique, enhance your strength, see some progress in the gym, and make it easier to progress to higher weights/more reps? You are not the only one. Pretty much everyone, at some point, will hit a wall when it comes to physical development progress, and most of the time, this barrier in the way of our development will be nutrition-dependent.
Are you finding it hard to hit your calorie targets or ingest the right number of proteins for consistent and predictable muscle gains? In such a case, I personally recommend considering top-shelf pure egg white powder. It’s not a wonder supplement that can make you triple your muscle mass in just a few weeks. However, compared to relying on natural sources of protein alone, egg white supplements have their own set of distinct benefits.
Why Consider Egg White Powder:
Shelf Life
- Fresh eggs are a fantastic source of protein, and for most people, they are, alongside chicken breast, the best way to supplement their daily protein intake and make it easier to hit their nutritional goals. But there’s an issue. Eggs are perishable, and even in the best of conditions, they only last a short while before they are no longer comestible. Egg white powder, however, can last for months or years, and therefore is a more practical purchase if food waste is a concern.
Easier Transportation
- As a protein source and general snack, eggs are fantastic. One normal egg will have around six grams of protein (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/protein-in-egg), be rich in choline, vitamin D, and also feature minerals such as selenium and iron. But nobody wants to be the weird guy that eats eggs between cardio sets, am I right? Dried egg whites are more transportable than whole eggs; they don’t require refrigeration, and they can be added to pretty much any drink or food you want.
A Richer Source of Proteins
- Six grams of protein per egg is nothing to scoff at, but it’s nowhere near enough for seeing real progress with muscle gains. Per the USDA dietary guidelines (https://www.dietaryguidelines.gov/sites/default/files/2020-12/Dietary_Guidelines_for_Americans_2020-2025.pdf), adults should consume around ten to thirty-five per cent of their daily calories from protein.
- For aspiring athletes, between 1.4 and 2g of protein per kg of bodyweight, per day, is sufficient for building or sustaining muscle mass. Egg white powder is denser in proteins than whole eggs, and for these reasons, it’s better suited for after-gym supplementation.
What Is the Actual Protein Difference?
Egg white powder is typically made by pasteurising egg whites and then spray-drying them. Nothing else is added, which makes products like this a popular protein-rich supplement for gym goers. Egg white protein powder typically has around 375 calories per 100g, while providing a whopping 85g of protein. Moreover, since products like these are made, essentially, from concentrated egg whites, the powder should have no fats, a very small amount of carbs, and be rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, sodium and potassium.
Egg whites are superfoods, and when they are present in a concentrated form, they are one of the best ways to supplement your daily nutritional intake and hit your daily protein target. How concentrated are these powders? Well, let’s put it this way. One large egg contains around 6-7g of protein, while one single scoop of powder contains around 30g. Just one serving of the egg-white protein powder is the equivalent of no less than five eggs. That’s significant.
If you go for three servings per day, 35g each, that will be the equivalent of no less than 14 medium-sized eggs. And you kind of need them. Are you trying to build muscle? If so, as we already discussed, you will need to consume around 1.4g of protein per kg of body weight. Do you weigh around 70kg? Then that’s a minimum of 98g of protein per day. A daily serving of egg white protein powder will get you about 86% of the way there, and most importantly, it will make it easier to hit your long-term targets.
Does This Mean You Should Skip Eggs Completely?
No, of course not. Whole eggs are a fantastic source of vitamins and micronutrients, they taste great, they can fill you up, and they can be a convenient add-on to any recipe. Personally, even though I utilise dried egg whites after my workouts, I still incorporate whole eggs into my diet from time to time. They are nature’s superfood, and they are great for you, even if you are already on track to hit your protein goals.
Egg white protein powder is a better choice when it comes to protein density, storage, shelf life, and prep time. However, nobody says you can’t go for both. I, for example, go for three scoops of protein powder per day, while my lunch is always protein-rich, featuring either tuna or chicken breast. As a target, I manage to consume around 200g of protein per day, even coming close to 250 if I also eat three or four whole eggs in the evening.
But getting here was a struggle. Before trying egg white powder, hitting the right calorie and protein targets was actually difficult for me. There’s only so much food you can realistically eat in a day, and only that much exercise you can handle on a full stomach. Egg white protein powder might not be right for you if you’re not currently trying to enhance your strength or gain muscle mass. However, if you are interested in your physique and you are careful about your nutritional intake, a supplement like this can definitely be a worthwhile investment.
