How to Choose the Right Pipe Wall Thickness for Your Project - SCH 40 or SCH 80

by xana lee on Aug 14, 2026 Business 11 Views

One of the most common questions when selecting American standard seamless steel pipes is: should you choose SCH 40 or SCH 80?

Simply put, SCH 40 is the most widely used and conventional choice, while SCH 80 is a "reinforced" version used only in specific, demanding operating conditions. The choice isn't simply about "which is better," but rather a trade-off between safety and economy.

The fundamental difference lies in wall thickness:

The essential difference between SCH 40 and SCH 80 is their wall thickness. For steel pipes of the same size, the outer diameter is fixed; the greater the wall thickness, the smaller the inner diameter, and the stronger the pressure resistance. You can think of it this way: SCH 40 is the standard configuration, while SCH 80 is the thicker version.

For example, for a 2-inch seamless pipe, the wall thickness of SCH 40 is 3.91 mm, while the wall thickness of SCH 80 is 5.54 mm, the latter being almost half as thick. Because of its thicker walls, SCH 80 is heavier and more expensive, typically 35% to 60% more expensive than SCH 40, but it also offers greater pressure resistance and mechanical strength.

Why is SCH 40 the most commonly used?

SCH 40 is the default choice for most projects because it strikes a good balance between several factors. It offers the highest cost-effectiveness, saving significant material costs without overpressure. Its moderate weight facilitates transportation, cutting, bending, and welding, resulting in higher installation efficiency. Simultaneously, SCH 40's relatively larger inner diameter reduces fluid resistance, leading to higher system efficiency.

Therefore, in conventional projects such as building water supply and drainage, HVAC systems, general industrial piping, and structural support, SCH 40 is almost the only choice.

When is SCH 80 necessary?

While SCH 40 is widely used, in certain specific conditions, the thicker walls of SCH 80 become a necessary guarantee.

Firstly, in high-pressure systems, when the design pressure exceeds the tolerance of SCH 40, such as in high-pressure steam pipelines and hydraulic systems, SCH 80 is essential.

Secondly, in threaded connection applications. SCH 40 has a thinner wall thickness, resulting in insufficient remaining wall thickness after threading, limiting connection strength. The thicker wall of SCH 80 ensures the reliability of threaded connections, a key reason why many engineers choose SCH 80 in high-pressure systems.

Thirdly, in corrosive environments. In highly corrosive media such as chemical plants and oil fields, pipe walls gradually thin over time. The extra wall thickness of SCH 80 provides a greater corrosion allowance, significantly extending the pipeline's service life.

Fourthly, in applications with high safety requirements, such as main pipelines in fire sprinkler systems and compressed air trunk lines, regulations often require the use of SCH 80 to ensure reliability under extreme conditions.

SCH 40 and SCH 80 SMLS Pipes: How to Choose Correctly?

The core basis for choosing between SCH 40 and SCH 80 is the design pressure and operating environment. SCH 40 is the preferred choice for most routine projects, offering the best cost-effectiveness; while SCH 80 is a safety precaution for high-pressure, corrosive, or high-safety environments—a higher initial investment yields a longer service life and a higher safety factor.

In engineering practice, judgment should not be based solely on experience. Professional engineers should perform calculations according to design specifications, comprehensively considering factors such as pressure, temperature, and corrosion allowance to determine the required minimum wall thickness, and then select the corresponding SCH grade. Choosing the right grade ensures both safety and economy; choosing the wrong grade either wastes money or creates safety hazards.
