How to avoid HEIC format when transferring photos from your iPhone

by Harry Lewis on Nov 21, 2022 Software 202 Views

Photos from iPhone may not work after transferring to a PC or Mac. This is usually because Apple saves iPhone photos in HEIC format to save space, but other devices do not widely support this format. HEIC format can be easily avoided when transferring photos from iPhone. It is the same if you need PDF files and for this you use https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pdf-scanner-app-scan-docs-id/id1495971405. This post will teach you how to convert iPhone photos during transfer, convert after transfer or change the default camera format.

What is the HEIC file format?

When iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra were released in 2017, Apple switched to HEIC and HEVC image and video formats. These file formats can compress photos up to 50% without compromising image quality.

This allows you to store more photos and videos on your Apple device without running out of storage space.

The downside is that HEIC and HEVC are not as widely supported as other popular file formats such as JPEG. This means that there may be compatibility issues when transferring photos and videos to other devices.

Apple's explanation for this incompatibility is that iPhone photos must be converted when transferred to a Mac or PC. But for this to actually happen, you may need to change your device's settings.

How to avoid your HEIC format when transferring photos to iPhone

Most people face problems after transferring HEIC format from iPhone to Mac or PC. On a Mac, you should be able to open HEIC images if you've upgraded to macOS High Sierra or later.

If that's not possible, change the settings on your iPhone so that photos are automatically converted to a compatible format when you transfer them to your Mac or PC. Proceed as follows:

 1. Select Settings > Photos.

 2. Scroll down and go to Mac or PC.

 3 Tap Auto.

 4. The next time you transfer photos to your old Mac or PC, iPhone will automatically convert the photos to JPEG files.

Convert iPhone photos to another format on Mac

iPhone converts photos to a format compatible with your computer. If you're using a Mac with macOS High Sierra or later, your photos will remain in HEIC format because High Sierra can read them.

However, this does not mean that all Mac applications will also work in this format.

If you want to convert your iPhone photos to another format, you can do so in the Photos app on your Mac. Follow these steps:

 1. Open Photos and select the photos you transferred from your iPhone.

 2. Select File > Export > Export Single Photo from the menu bar.

 3. Select the desired format from the Image Type drop-down menu, click the Export button, and select a location to save the exported images.

Exported photos can be opened in some third-party applications.
