The history of fly fishing

The origins of fly fishing can be traced back to ancient Roman times, when fishermen caught fish with red-line baits. In addition, the Japanese Tenkala tradition, still practiced today, is a very early form of fly fishing. It also uses weighted lines, but lacks reels compared to fly fishing.

The first book on fly-fishing was published at the end of the 15th century: The Treaty Concerning Fly Fishing (1496). In the 19th century, the first fly-fishing clubs appeared in England and more books were published on fly-fishing (the art of making flies) and the technique of fly-fishing.

In the United States, fly fishing experienced its first boom in the late 1800s, when trout were caught in rivers such as the Beaverkill River in the Catskills, just outside New York City. A second wave of popularity followed the development of fiberglass rods and fly wires in the early 1950s.

Recently, fly fishing has become a very popular outdoor recreational activity of all ages. Robert Redford's iconic film, "A River Runs Through It," featuring a young Brad Pitt, undoubtedly contributed to the sport's popularity.

Most anglers carry out their sport in fresh water. Trout fishing is certainly the most popular and traditional type of fly fishing. Traditionally, fly fishing in cold water has been mostly done on rivers and streams. However, in recent years, fly fishing for predatory species such as barracuda or perch has become increasingly popular, so waters such as ponds or lakes are still a place for flying fish.

In addition to trout fishing, salmon fishing with large two-handed rods is also popular on both sides of the Atlantic. Fly fishermen in Scandinavia and eastern Canada aim Atlantic salmon with fly fishing rods. It is undoubtedly one of the most sought after fly rod species.
