However, C&EN’s latest survey of the top 50 global chemical manufacturers based on fiscal 2019 data shows that economic activity was slowing before people heard about the new coronavirus.

The chemical revenue of these 50 companies in 2019 was US$855.6 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 5.0%.

The decline in earnings was even greater.
46 companies that reported operating income reported a total profit of 71.5 billion U.S. dollars, 28.2% lower than in 2018.
Sasol reported a loss, something the largest chemical company has never seen in years.

In explaining the reasons for the poor performance in 2019, executives cited trade tensions between China and the United States, the slowdown of China's economy, and the downturn in key markets such as auto manufacturing.

There is no doubt that chemical companies will face a more severe recession this year.
Due to the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the automobile industry completely stagnated in the second quarter, oil prices plummeted, and the consumer economy was hit hard in the new home world.

The forecast for 2020 is pessimistic.
The American Chemistry Council predicts that global gross domestic product (gdp) will shrink by 4.6% this year, and the United States will decline by 6.0%.
The basic assumption of the trade organization is that U.S. chemical production will fall by 9.3% in 2020.
