Keep reading to find out the different types of electric charging cables
EV charging cables
Charging cables are an essential part of charging an electric vehicle. While some charging stations come with their cables attached, others require you to bring your own. Charging cables come in four modes, each used in certain charging stations. However, charging cables differ from one country to another, the vehicle you drive, and the type of electric charging stations you intend to use. The following are the different types of charging cable modes:-
Mode 1
Mode 1 is simple and unsuitable for charging cars as there are no safety systems or protection from shock. It’s suitable for only electric bikes. The cable is connected to an
EV to a standard AC socket-outlet using an extension cord.
Mode 2
Most electric cars come with mode 2 charging cables as standard. These cables can be plugged into your electric car on one end, and a standard domestic socket on the end of the cable that has in-cable control and protection device called IC-CPD. It’s responsible for the control and communication, and protection of the standard wall plug and the car. Mode 2 type charging cable is the most convenient one. However, since most household outlets can only deliver up to 3.2kw of power, charging the car with this method can take a long time.
Mode 3
Mode 3 charging cables are the most common and easy way to charge any electric car worldwide. This charging cable connects the vehicle through dedicated electric stations commonly found in residential properties, commercial places, workplaces, and parking lots. These cables are responsible for the control, communication, protection of the charging process and can connect to charging plugs like Type 1 and Type 2.
Mode 4
With the above modes, they send AC power to the car and convert through an AC and DC converter. But, mode 4 is completely different from other modes. Mode 4 charging cables are exclusively used for DC charging, and the power is converted before transmitting to the vehicle. Mode 4 charging cables are known as fast-charging or ultra-fast charging. Since this type of charging transfers more power directly to the battery, the cables should be permanently connected to the charging stations.
