A prosthodontist is a dentist who has specialized in treating dental complications and facial matters. They do complex work to help people with difficulty performing mouth routines (eating, yawning, biting, etc.). The work of a prosthodontist includes the restoration and replacement of missing and damaged teeth with artificially constructed ones.
These professionals are highly trained and spend about three years more than the average dentist going into this specialization. They are learned in all aspects of dental implants, crowns, bridges, jaw disorders, dentures, etc.
Prosthetics (or dental prosthetics in this case) are artificially created materials used to replace a missing tooth or cover up defective or misshapen teeth by dental prosthetists. They include dental crowns, implants, and veneers. Some prosthetics are removable, and others are permanent. Please read to the end of this article for more information.
What do dentures entail?
In most cases, prosthodontists are tasked with creating dentures (a type of prosthetics) for patients. Dentures are devices that substitute for missing teeth-creating them is no easy task. The procedure for making these is taught in the extra three years spent by the prosthodontist. The steps are highlighted below;
The Steps for making and fixing dentures by a prosthodontist
-
The prosthodontist will assess the patient's bite and jaw strength by having him bite a resin negative.
-
An impression of the patient’s bite is taken using a plaster cast model taken from a replica of the patient's mouth after the teeth are thoroughly cleaned to avoid abscesses or inflammation that may cause an unnatural impression.
-
The dentist will then trim the plaster for excess materials.
-
After the first impression has been made, an optional, custom-made impression may also be created, which is used to create the final cast of dentures. This step is sometimes skipped.
-
The prosthodontist creates the temporary gums of the denture using modeling (dental) wax.
-
Both the patient and the dentist test the dentures to check if they fit correctly and are tolerable to the patient's jaw. The patient will experience some perfectly normal discomfort.
-
If the dentures are okay, they are sent to the laboratory to convert the wax into a pink plastic resembling a gum.
-
After this is done, the finalized denture is sent back to the dentist and will be fitted to the patient to check that they are working properly. Discomfort and sores are normal.
-
Every patient must return for follow-up checkups in the first few weeks so the dentist can confirm that the prosthetics and the mouth are bonding well. This bonding will cause a reduction in the pain experienced as the mouth gets used to its new set of teeth.
Conclusion
To ensure you have the best denture care, do some research on the dentist and check if they are licensed prosthodontists. There are a lot of quacks in the industry, and even some dental technicians posing as prosthodontists, which is not the same thing.
If you are treated incorrectly, it will lead to greater health and financial burdens caused by the inappropriate treatment. It is recommended to ask your doctor for their patient history and other related prosthetic issues before the treatment starts.
