How to detect seamless steel pipe

Compared with welded steel pipes, seamless pipes have higher mechanical properties, because seamless pipes are perforated from a whole round steel. Therefore, seamless pipes are widely used in many fields.

What is the development process of perforation?

Today in the seamless steel pipe production process, the piercing process is widely used and is very economical. In 1886, the German Mannesmann brothers applied for a patent for producing tubular cross-section products with a skewed roll piercer. The patent describes the action of internal forces as the metal is deformed and pierced using two or more tapered rolls, hence the name Mannesmann piercing process.

The guide plate invented by R.C Stiefel allows the capillary length to be increased after piercing. Later, S. Discher invented the guide plate, which greatly improved the perforation efficiency. In 1981, a double-supported conical roller piercer appeared (the single-supported conical roller piercer was invented by R.C Stifel in 1899), which has obvious improvements in metal deformation than previous piercers. 

In the first half of the 20th century, Germany and the United States made great improvements in piercing. In the second half, Germany, Russia and Japan advanced the piercing machine one step further. Recently, China has also made great achievements.

The perforation process in today's seamless steel pipe production is more reasonable and the perforation process has been automated. The common perforators are cone roll perforator and barrel roll perforator.

The role of piercing process in modern steel pipe production

In the production of seamless steel pipes, the function of the piercing process is to pierce the solid tube blank into a hollow capillary tube. The whole production process generally includes piercing, rolling and sizing and reducing processes. As the first process of metal deformation, piercing is called capillary because the wall thickness of the pierced pipe is thicker, the length is shorter, and the quality of the inner and outer surfaces is poor. If there are some defects on the capillary, it is difficult to eliminate or alleviate them through subsequent processes. Therefore, the perforation process plays an important role in modern steel pipe production.
