Similar to past games in the series, Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 relives the key moments of the last Shippuden arc starting with the prologue battle between Harishama and Madara. The fourth great ninja war has begun and it’s up to Naruto and his friends to put a stop on Madara’s plan in achieving his planned dream world. Unlike in past games where Naruto mostly takes the lead in the story mode of the game, Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 now gives players a chance to play many new characters such as the first Hokage, Obito, and many more. Not to mention, Sasuke will be playable among the plethora of other characters available in the game.

Each character has their own moveset, and despite boasting over 100 options I did not play one fighter that felt like a “clone” of another, as can happen in fighting games. Often different versions of the same characters would even play completely differently, which keeps players on their toes and provides the perfect amount of challenge throughout the experience. My personal favorite character to play as was Kakashi, who had a nice balance between speed and power.

Combos have always been a highlight of the series and I love how they are big, bad and quite over the top. Best of all, combat in Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 flows very well and controlling your character in the fighting environment is a breeze.

As for the online battles, they are back, along with the free play mode. From my experience, there is very minimal lag on the few matches that I tried. Almost the same mechanics are present in the online portion and those who have played the game before online will pretty much be familiar with the online portion in this game. Unlike in past -games, Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 now has over 100 characters that are playable in a three-on-three battle.

Overall, this game was phenomenal and one of the best fighting games that I have ever played. Often with fighting games, the combo system can be hard to understand and nearly impossible to master, but none of those usual issues were present. The story was engaging, had no loose ends, and was a great end to the tale of Naruto. In addition, the inclusion of the other modes of gameplay, as well as the ranking and collecting systems, ensure the game’s longevity. With few hiccups, a great story, and some of the best combat I’ve ever experienced, Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is a gem and worth picking up, even if you’re not a fan.
