A new handheld non-invasive monitoring device uses multi-layer nanotechnology to detect acetone molecular weight, which has been proved to be related to the blood sugar level in the breath of diabetes patients. This research was published at the annual meeting and exposition of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) in 2013, which is the largest pharmaceutical science conference in the world and was held in San Antonio from November 10 to 14.
According to the data of the World Health Organization, about 347 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes, an autoimmune disease that prevents cells from naturally absorbing sugar from the blood. It is usually necessary to continuously monitor blood sugar. Current technologies, such as blood glucose meters, are invasive and can cause discomfort to patients, often leading to low compliance. This in turn can lead to poor health outcomes.
Dr. Ronny Priefer of the University of West New England created this multilayer technology using nano thick films, which are composed of two polymers that react with acetone. This cross-linked polymer changes the physical and chemical properties of the film, thus providing the quantification of acetone, thus providing blood glucose levels.
"Breath intoxicators are a growing research field, because they may have a significant positive impact on patients' quality of life and compliance with diabetes monitoring. Our technology is different in that it only considers acetone, and will not react with other components in the breath." "The alcohol intoxicator we currently have is about the size of a book, but we are working with Dr. Michael Laster, an engineer at the University of West New England, to make it smaller and closer to the size of the alcohol intoxicator commonly used to detect blood alcohol level."
The other common defects of the currently tried respiration analyzer technology are the unstable results due to the natural humidity of respiration, high temperature requirements and lack of selectivity.
