The magnesium iodide formula is also called the magnesium iodide formula. It is an inorganic salt easily found in sea water. In addition, it is a chemical substance containing a large amount of hydrates, usually ionic halides that are highly soluble in water.
Formula and structure of magnesium iodide
The chemical formula of magnesium iodide is MgI2. In addition, I also exists in the form of MgI2 (anhydrous), MgI2 ⏴ 6H2O (hexahydrate), MgI2 ⏴ 8H2O (octahydrate) and other forms.
The molar mass of each form is 278.1139 g/mol for anhydrous magnesium iodide, 386.2005 g/mol for hexahydrate magnesium iodide, and 422.236 g/mol for anhydride magnesium iodide. Structurally, magnesium ion Mg2+reacts with iodine anion I2+.
It exists in anhydrous form and has hexagonal crystal structure. The hexahydrate form is monoclinic structure, and the octahydrate form is orthogonal structure.
Occurrence of magnesium iodide
In nature, it exists in sea salt and is a common inorganic salt. Generally speaking, it is immediately available in most quantities, nanometer powder, submicron, and high purity. Scientists prepare them in the laboratory.
Preparation of magnesium iodide
Magnesium iodide can be prepared from magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate by hydroiodic acid treatment. The reaction is as follows:
Respectively with+Hi → MgI2+H2O
Oxides+2 Hi → MgI2+CO2+water
Reaction of magnesium iodide
It is stable at high temperature in hydrogen atmosphere. However, at normal or room temperature, it decomposes in the air and turns brown due to the release of iodine. In addition, when we heat it in the air, it will completely decompose from magnesium oxide.
Another method for preparing MgI2 is to mix powdered element iodine with metal magnesium. To obtain anhydrous magnesium iodide MgI2, but this reaction needs to be carried out in a strictly anhydrous atmosphere. We can use dry ether as solvent.
Properties of magnesium iodide
It looks like a white crystalline solid without any smell. The density of its different forms is: anhydrous solid density is 4.43g/cm3, hexahydrate solid density is 2.353g/cm3, and octahydrate solid density is 2.098g/cm3.
In addition, it is soluble in ether, ammonia and alcohol. In water, it is highly soluble. Its heat capacity is 74 J/mol k. Although it is stable, it will react in damp and air. Its melting point is 637 degrees Celsius, above which it will decompose.
Use of magnesium iodide
Generally speaking, we use it in internal medicine. In addition, it has almost no commercial use, but we can use it to prepare organically synthesized compounds.
Health and safety hazards of magnesium iodide
It is slightly dangerous if it comes into contact with skin and causes eye irritation. It can also cause irritation if swallowed or inhaled. However, this substance is toxic to the thyroid because it contains iodine. In addition, repeated and prolonged exposure to it will cause serious damage to organs.
Its intake may cause vomiting and respiratory problems in some people. Long exposure to the eyes can cause blindness. Although not flammable, it can react with water to form magnesium hydroxide.
Examples solved for you
Q: Mention a method for preparing magnesium iodide?
Solution: We can prepare magnesium iodide by reaction of magnesium hydroxide and hydroiodic acid:
Mg (OH) 2+2 Hi → MgI2+2 water
Description: Magnesium hydroxide reacts with hydroiodic acid to generate magnesium iodide and water.
