To run a successful business, you need to have a plan. Not just a plan on what you are trying to sell and who you can target to buy your product or service, but an actionable plan for all of the procedures that take place within the walls of your office. Part of having a plan is to make sure that everyone understands their role within it and what their responsibilities are so you can achieve (or exceed) the results you desire. This includes how your business will handle waste management.
In putting your waste management plan into action, Step One is to identify the person or team who will create and implement the plan, and be responsible for tracking its progress. If you are the owner of a small business, the task may fall on your shoulders. If you’re the CEO of a large corporation with multiple offices, you may want to appoint one central person that everyone reports to and have project managers at each location. The point person may also create a committee or team to create a consensus on how things should be handled, then create a plan of action on how it will be accomplished.
Step Two is to audit how you are currently handling waste management so you can set a benchmark that will be the basis of how well your new plan is working. This is a step you can do internally, or you can have an independent waste management company come in to provide an audit, as well as advise you on how you can move forward by taking advantage of certain opportunities.
Step Three is to set goals. Are you simply looking to increasing your recycling efforts or are you more concerned with reducing waste management expenses? Or both? Do you want to add a composting element to your plan? Whatever you are trying to achieve, by setting attainable goals, you’ll have a target to shoot for. If you don’t reach your goals within the timeframe you’ve chosen, you’ll either need to adjust your plan of action or re-examine the goals themselves.
Step Four is to put your plan into action. If your goal is to increase recycling efforts, one part of your plan may be to replace paper plates and plastic flatware in the office kitchen with washable plates and reusable flatware. You may want to do away with bottled water, provide water coolers throughout the office or put filters on the faucets, and provide your employees with reusable insulated water bottles. You may even want to brand the bottles with your company logo. If your goal is to reduce waste management expenses, your waste management advisor can provide some assistance.
Step Five is to monitor your progress and adjust as necessary. As mentioned in Step Three, if you’re not reaching the goals you set, find out what needs to change and make the necessary adjustments. Do you need to have a monthly “pep rally” to motivate employees to be more involved with recycling efforts? Are you using the correct waste management company to help you lower your overall expenses? Once you have some ideas in place, go back to Step Four and repeat the process. And remember, your needs will likely evolve over time, so you may need to occasionally return to Step Three to make new goals.
