TIPS FOR LEARNING IRREGULAR VERBS IN ENGLISH

There are a lot of irregular verbs, aren't there? Many of them have three shapes and it can get tricky to save each one! So, the first tip is to start your studies with the most used verbs, such as do, be, make, have, and know, because you can use them while you learn. Irregular verbs less commonly to be used are learned through further study of English.

Note that many irregular verbs in English have similarities, and this can help a lot in your studies. The shape of some of them is the same in all verb tenses, like cut, put and hit. Other verbs have a different base but the same form in the simple past and past participle, as does buy, which is bought in both cases; bring, which becomes brought; and fight, which is fought. Therefore, the tip is to gather all the verbs that work in a similar way to facilitate memorization, accelerating the process of learning the verbs.

When studying a new irregular verb, write down all of its forms in a notebook, cell phone, or computer for reference as needed. Also, write example sentences for each form of the verb. This way, it is faster to save them and the consultation to find out more about them is very accessible. 

 Listen to songs that have irregular verbs

The songs are already famous in English studies, right? And they are still a great alternative to learning irregular verbs, as well as being fun! Because of the rhymes and the sound, it is easier to keep the verb forms. Choose songs you like and memorize the entire lyrics or at least the parts where irregular verbs appear. 

 Realize pronunciation patterns

Just as there are patterns in the writing of irregular verbs, you can also notice them in pronunciation. Join the ways that are similar when speaking, such as drinking, ringing, singing, sink, and swimming. The technique for these is the “iau”, that is, the “i” of the infinitive is replaced by the “a” in the simple past and the “u” in the past participle, for example, drink - drank - drunk.
