Lip filler treatments are designed to improve the appearance of lips by adding shape, structure, and volume. However, all lips are not created equally, so it is important to note that lip filler injections can only enhance what you already have to work with. In other words, before you go in for your first treatment, you should consult with a lip filler professional who can provide you with some examples of other people’s results who have a similar lip structure as what you have. If what you see meets your expectations, you can move forward from there.
Before your first filler injection, you will be provided with some pre-treatment instructions that will help improve the outcome of your visit. The instructions are different for each facility that provides this service, but typically they will tell you not to take anything that can thin your blood for at least one week prior to your injections. Bruising and some bleeding are common side effects of the treatment, so by avoiding things like aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain supplements such as Vitamin E or Omega 3 fish oils, these issues can be avoided or greatly diminished. Be sure to check with your practitioner if you have any questions.
The procedure itself can generally be performed quite quickly. Here’s what you can expect when you go in for the first injection:
- A stinging sensation. When the needle is inserted into your lips or around your mouth, you may feel a slight “pinch” and possibly a stinging sensation. You may also feel a bit of a stinging sensation as the filler is injected. Some facilities will provide you with a topical numbing treatment to lessen this discomfort. You may also be instructed to put ice on the treated area after the procedure is completed to reduce swelling and bruising.
- Reactions are normal. No matter how closely you follow the pre-treatment instructions, some bleeding, bruising, and swelling is still perfectly normal. A small amount of bleeding may occur at the injection sites, and some bruising and swelling may occur directly afterwards. In some cases, bruising does not happen until a couple of days after the procedure, so do not be alarmed if this happens. Everything should be back to normal within five to seven days.
- Time your procedure. Unlike Botox® injections that can provide almost instant results after the procedure has been completed, lip fillers may take one to three weeks to show their full results. If you are getting a lip filler treatment to be ready for a special event, it is best to plan your visit at least three weeks out, just to be sure you’ll look your very best for the event.
- The procedure is not permanent. Lip filler treatments can provide exquisite result for six to 12 months. However, if you are not absolutely pleased with the outcome, you can schedule a follow-up appointment to have a hyaluronidase enzyme injection that will dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers.
