• Types of OPT

Students who have been lawfully enrolled for one full academic year at a certified college, university, seminary, or conservatory may apply for pre-completion OPT. This program allows applicants to work 20 hours or less each week while school is in session and full-time when it is not.

In comparison, post-completion OPT may only apply after a student has completed his or her studies. A post-completion OPT applicant must work part-time or full-time.

• Eligibility

All OPT programs require you to obtain employment in a field directly related to your area of study. For instance,an applicant with a degree in Information Technology may find work as an IT technician, web developer, or computer programmer.

Additionally, students must meet the following eligibility standards before applying for the OPT program:

• Maintain a valid F-1 status at the time of application
• Be enrolled full-time or for at least one full academic year in the United States
• Be physically present in the US during application submission

• Requirements
