While you may not realise it, your toddler’s motor skills are growing every day from the time they’re born. They learn to walk and talk, they figure out how to play with toys, and they even master tasks that require hand-eye coordination, like tossing a ball back and forth or catching their reflection in the mirror.
For parents of toddlers who aren’t quite at this stage yet, figuring out how to help them develop these skills can seem like an impossible task. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t get them started on developing essential motor skills, like balance and coordination. There are a number of ways you can help your child practice motor skills from a young age. Here are some tips from teachers of a reputed Dee Why children's centre for helping your toddler develop their motor skills
Start Young
There’s no need to wait until a child is 2 or 3 years old to start helping them learn how to walk, stand, and run. Take those first steps as soon as you can. Babies under 6 months old can walk if their motor skills are developed enough; support them on your lap and practice getting them to take their first steps. Most babies aren’t ready for walking until they reach 9-12 months of age, but that doesn’t mean you should stop trying!
Encourage Movement
It’s easy to assume that you can sit your baby in front of a television or hand them an iPad and they’ll develop just fine, but nothing could be further from the truth. The best way to help your child develop motor skills is by being engaged with them. Whether it’s playing games, using sensory toys like musical instruments, drawing or painting on paper, or practicing sports, these activities give kids something to practice their motor skills with.
Set Limits and Be Patient
Be patient, and let your toddler take his or her time learning how to walk. Set limits on where they can go and what they can play with to help them feel secure while also allowing you to set limits that will keep them safe. These simple steps will make a big difference in their development of motor skills.
Investigate Playthings
Toys are a huge influence on how your child develops their motor skills, so it’s essential to choose high-quality toys that encourage development and creativity. Consider the little one’s age when choosing a toy, as you’ll want to pick something that will challenge them but also be appropriate for their stage of development.
Join Them in Play
Anytime you want to help your child develop a new skill, join them in their current activity after returning from child care Dee Why. This is especially true with motor skills, because children are learning how to coordinate their bodies by doing whatever it is they’re currently doing. If your child wants to jump around on their toes, clap and dance, jump over objects or flip through a book, let them! The more they engage in these activities on their own terms and at their own pace, both you and they will have fun developing those skills.
Follow these tips and enrol your kid in child care centres Dee Why. Preschool is one of the best places to learn all the skills for toddlers.
