People think that the layout of your workstation or office does not directly affect your productivity. It seems trivial to think that a simple layout issue can cause a decrease in the effectiveness of daily production. However in 1985, it has been proven that workspace has an effect on productivity.
In this study, Tom DeMarco and Tim Lister have proven that what determines productivity is not just the salary and the experience. This showed that another huge factor is the general feel of a person’s work environment.
What makes an office more productive?
In 2009, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology published a study where they analysed deeper the link between workplace layout and productivity. This was done by surveying thirty one banking branches from financial institutions in Pakistan where they discovered that spatial arrangement, lighting, noice, and furniture directly affect the productivity of individual employees.
Since then, we’ve seen growth in effort to create better office layouts. There’s also a growing industry with services that offer office fitouts. In places like Sydney office fitouts are highly sought after to improve the general feel of every work environment.
Creative ideas for a fresh office layout
Although available office fitout Sydney agencies generally offer great pricing and rates, some people might still like doing it themselves and breaking a few sweats here and there.
1.Open space and flexible seating
This is best for a fast-paced environment where work requires a lot of collaboration. If your office has issues in internal communication, this is the best set up for you. There’s a lot of communication possibilities that can be achieved with this layout. Among these are respectful impromptu meetings, group conferences, and general strengthening of interpersonal connection.
2.Sheltered cubes with privacy screens
In perfect contrast with the first example, sheltered cubes where people can privately do their work is a great incentive for people who are more productive in their own private stations. While open spaces solve lack of communication, sheltered cubes will solve overstimulation.
3.Inspiration boards and idea banks
This layout does not focus on problems and instead maximizes incentivized working spaces. Installing inspiration boards and idea banks humanizes workers. It makes them feel included and heard. When workers feel like they are valued, they give the company more time and energy in return. This type of layout tries to fuse the solution that the first and second examples offer. This aims to create balance between communication channels while incentivizing employees to work better.
The key is understanding the type of workers you have and capitalizing on the type of environment they thrive in. Not one solution is better than the other. It is better to understand the needs of the employees first before establishing huge changes.
