Top Things to Visit in Nantes

by addam james on Jun 7, 2023 Cruises 283 Views

Even if it is currently in a new region, Nantes will always be the capital of Brittany. Until the Duchy of Brittany was with France in the 16th century, the Dukes of Brittany ruled their territory from here, and their former seat of power is still one of Nantes' most prominent buildings.

Nantes' lifeblood is the Loire, which brings the world to its doorstep and allows trade and industry to grow. Using the city's Navibus shuttles, you may ride the amazing machines on the Île de Nantes or relax by the water in Trentemoult, a bohemian town on the left bank.

1. Château des Ducs de Bretagne
The last château on the Loire before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean is the former seat of the Dukes of Brittany. The castle was in the 13th century and was occupied by the Dukes for 300 years before becoming a French royal seat in the 1500s. The courtyard and ramparts are free to enter, but visitors must pay to visit the Nantes History Museum, which depicts the city's growth from slavery to its heyday as an industrial port. The green meadow beside the deep moat, the Douves du Château, is a great spot for an afternoon break in the summer.

2. Les Machines de l’Île
The artist François Delaroziere has brought to life charming animatronic animals inspired by Jules Verne's tales and Leonardo da Vinci's imaginative gizmos on the west side of the Île de Nantes. The Carrousel des Mondes Marins is a gigantic carousel featuring moving sea creatures, and the Arbre aux Hérons is a climbable sculpture shaped like a massive tree with ramps and stairways. Many more sculptures may be in the interior Galerie des Machines, which also shows how they were built.

3. Place du Bouffay
This square is in the heart of Bouffay, Nantes's oldest quarter. Place names like "Place du Pilori" (pillory) and "Rue de la Juiverie" (Jewry) give you an idea of how old this district is. On the pedestrian streets, half-timbered houses from the 1400s coexist with cafés, crêperies, and some of the city's liveliest nightclubs. The plaza as it currently dates from the 1700s, but there are intriguing vestiges of a more distant past: on the corner of Rue des Échevins, there is a 15th-century gothic fireplace jutting right out of the wall.

4. Jardin des Plantes
One of France's "remarkable gardens," the Jardin des Plantes, features 10,000 species distributed across seven hectares. The gardens are in the heart of the city, only 10 minutes walk from the Château des Ducs de Bretagne. The Palm House is a fantastic late-nineteenth-century metal and glass edifice with plants from tropical America, while the three greenhouses to the sides hold orchids from Africa and Asia. You'll witness mature trees like the 220-year-old magnolia and two massive sequoias planted 150 years ago as you walk the walkways.

5. Île Feydeau
When exploring Île Feydeau, you might wonder why this region immediately south of the city centre is an island, or why streets have names like Quai Turenne when there's no trace of water. It was an island until the 1930s when one of the Loire's arms was off. Their flat-fronted houses are stunning, with iron balconies, mansard roofs, and stone grotesques. Because the ground beneath remains soft, some of these townhouses have an appealing slant.

6. Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle
Nantes' Natural History Museum features galleries for every branch of natural science and is in the city's former mint. The fin whale skeleton in the zoology exhibit, which is more than 18 metres long and hanging from the ceiling, is sure to draw attention. The Vivarium, which was in 1955 and was recently rebuilt, contains terrariums with snakes and other exotic reptiles.

. Nantes Cathedral
The construction of the city's cathedral began in 1434 and lasted over 400 years. Construction in the extravagant gothic style lasted into the 1600s, despite being far out of fashion by then, because it matched the earlier work. He'd be for the next 20 years of his life. Make time to visit the Tomb of Francis II, Duke of Brittany, which is a French Renaissance masterpiece. It was in 1507 and features frightening sculptures made of white Carrara marble.

8. Cours Cambronne
Cours Cambronne, a beautiful square between two 180-metre-long terraces of neoclassical residences, is part of a new city area constructed in the 18th century. The statue of Pierre Cambronne, a military general born in Nantes who was in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, maybe along the regal central boulevard. Sixteen of the square's magnificent pilastered homes are in the inventory of French historic monuments. Hôtel Scheult, near the summit of Rue Piron, deserves special mention for its repaired front.

9. Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage
It's worth remembering that the slave trade was responsible for much of Nantes' Ancien Régime magnificence. Nantes was the first city in France to ship slaves on a big scale, and the majority of France's slave ships departed from this port throughout the 18th century. So the plaque honouring the end of slavery on Quai de la Fosse, near to the Loire, is especially painful. In a subterranean passage, you may learn about the many expeditions that left Nantes, as well as the names of the ships involved.

10. Musée de l’Imprimerie
Nantes has had a long history with the printing press, dating back to 1493, when the Breton poet Jean Meschinot published Les Lunettes des Princes. This museum, founded in 1986 by master printer Sylvain Chiffoleau and typesetter Robert Colombeau, houses an incredible collection of manual and mechanical printing equipment. Intaglio plates, lithography plates, dyes, and vintage typesetting molds are also available.
