1. Château des Ducs de Bretagne
The last château on the Loire before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean is the former seat of the Dukes of Brittany. The castle was in the 13th century and was occupied by the Dukes for 300 years before becoming a French royal seat in the 1500s. The courtyard and ramparts are free to enter, but visitors must pay to visit the Nantes History Museum, which depicts the city's growth from slavery to its heyday as an industrial port.
