Brussels, Belgium's capital, is a fascinating city with stunning architecture and fascinating history crammed into every street and alleyway. The city's vibe is difficult to pin down. It appears to be very business and bureaucracy focused at times, after all, it is the EU's administrative centre, but at other times it appears laid back and does not take itself too: think Manneken Pis and The Comic Strip Centre.
This multi-layered atmosphere is what makes Brussels such a wonderful city to visit. It has something for everyone, with European staples like art and architecture as well as more unusual attractions. If you're on a diet, avoid Brussels because the fries, mussels, and beer will shortly have you indulging.
Plan a trip to this amazing city of Brussels with TAP Portugal booking and spend your days in Brussels.
1. Grand Place
The Grand Place in Brussels is away from the city centre, but when you walk in, you will be speechless. The beautiful 15th-century city hall stands in the centre of the Grand Place, but the six guild halls and their striking architecture can be throughout the square. The square is worth seeing several times throughout the day. On some days, there is indeed a flower industry in the plaza, and it is best to visit at night.
2. Old England Building
The Old England Building in Brussels was in the final year of the nineteenth century and was a department store. The museum houses over 2000 historical musical instruments and allows visitors to listen to many of them. The cafe on the building's roof offers breathtaking views of the city and you can tap book flight.
3. Brussel’s Notre Dame Du Sablon
This magnificent Gothic cathedral began life as a chapel for the Archer's Guild in the 14th century. It was in the following century due to the popularity and supposed healing powers of the Madonna statue within. The statue was allegedly stolen in a rowing boat by a husband and wife team of thieves. The statue's location is unknown, but a lifesize model inside the building commemorates the story.
4. Costume Museum
Lace is one of Brussels' oldest crafts, and needlepoint lace, which originated in Italy, was one of the city's main industries. The museum features lace outfit details as well as many historical outfits. The exhibitions change but are always well presented.
5. Le Botanique
Le Botanique was the city's botanical garden, and it still draws a large number of visitors today. The greenhouse, which dates back to the nineteenth century, now hosts a variety of performing arts, giving the place the feel of a cultural centre rather than a garden. But, if you enjoy the greenery, the surrounding gardens are still intact and present in all their glory and provide a welcome change of pace from the city itself.
6. Palais Royal
Although the Belgian royal family now lives in Laeken, the Royal Palace in Brussels remains their official house. The palace is open to tourists during the summer months and is an excellent addition to any itinerary while in the city. The most notable room in the palace has a ceiling covered in beetle wings, creating a beautiful mosaic. The artwork and interior design are also as impressive as one would expect from a royal palace.
