Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by bilateral motor (eg, bradykinesia, resting tremor, postural instability, rigidity) and nonmotor (eg, memory loss, depression) disability. About 10 million people worldwide suffer from Parkinson’s disease. Current PD treatments are limited to motor symptom management, such as dopamine replacement therapy or enhancing the activity of remaining dopaminergic neurons. There are no known treatments that slow progression or prevent the onset of the disease. Furthermore, PD patients are growing at an unprecedented rate and are expected to increase to 17.5 million by 2040. Although aging remains a major risk factor for PD, more than 20 genes have been found to be associated with PD onset and progression, suggesting therapeutic potential for Parkinson’s disease. The current drugs for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease are mainly levodopa, which forms ... Continue reading →

After the host is infected by the virus, the immune system can generate a corresponding immune response. Antibodies specific to viral surface proteins produced at this time can often prevent the virus from adhering to the surface of host cells, making it incapable of infecting cells. However, in some cases, antibodies play the opposite role during viral infection, they assist the virus to enter the target cells and increase the infection rate, this phenomenon is antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE). The role of ADE was first reported by Hawkes in the 1960s. Since then, the presence of ADE has been found in the infection of more than 40 kinds of viruses in multiple families and genera. It is often difficult to prevent and control such viral diseases with ADE effects. Mechanism of ADE Action in Viral Infection This intricate mechanism has been the focus of intense scrutiny, with scientists examining the involvement of various immune cells such as ... Nucleic acid is the main material for storing, copying, and transmitting genetic information. Nucleic acid extraction is one of the most fundamental steps in molecular biology applications and is a prerequisite for many experiments. The quality of extracted nucleic acid will directly affect the results of subsequent detection in experiments. Traditional nucleic acid extraction methods are both time-consuming and laborious, in addition to operators requiring professional training. Magnetic beads (MBs) are considered a powerful tool for nucleic acid extraction. Coupling of magnetic properties with specific ligands in MBs allows the separation and purification of nucleic acids in a highly efficient and specific manner. In fact, this technique has driven a technological revolution in biological research. Nucleic acid extraction by magnetic particles? The method of extracting nucleic acids by MBs is widely used in various fields. Applying a magnetic field attracts the target-bound molecule ... Continue reading →

Pectin is a hydrophilic vegetable gum. Widely present in the fruits, roots, stems and leaves of higher plants, it is a component of the cell wall. The pectin content of different plants or different parts of the same plant varies greatly. So far, only a few plants with high pectin content have been found and used as raw materials for industrial production, mainly citrus peels, sunflower trays, and sugar beets. Pectin is the general term for protopectin, pectin and pectic acid. Protopectin is insoluble in water and only exists in the cell wall; pectin is soluble in water and exists in the cell juice; pectin acid is slightly soluble in water and exists in both the cell wall and the cell fluid. Chemical Structure of Pectin Pectin is a macromolecular polysaccharide formed by the polymerization of D-galacturonic acid residues through α-1,4 bonds, with a molecular weight between 50,000 and 300,000. Among them, the carboxyl group of galacturonic acid may be methylated to varying ... Continue reading →

Cytotoxicity testing is a sensitive method to assess the biocompatibility of a material extracted through a specific cell culture media following exposure of the extracted fluid to L929 cells. This test is performed on raw materials in the manufacturing process, all medical devices contacting patients, and devices undergoing a sterilization validation. STEMart provides a wide range of in vitro cytotoxicity assays to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate the ability of medical device to damage cells or tissues. Qualitative Methods Extraction Method/ MEM Elution In Minimum Essential Medium (MEM), extract the leachable of a medical device for 24 hours. An extract is then placed over the L929 cells. The cells are examined microscopically for morphological changes, degeneration, and lysis of the cells following incubation. Fig. 1 Qualitative cytotoxicity test with MEM elution. Agar Diffusion/ Agarose Overlay Assay In this method, a thin layer of ... Continue reading →
