This is an effective way of removing the chloride ion from concrete, and can help to restore the protective environment around the reinforcing steel, prolonging the service life of the structure.

Realkalization is an electrochemical process related to the restoration of alkalinity of carbonated concrete. With the passage of time, the natural alkalinity of concrete may be lowered by CO2 from the air, which can lead to corrosion of the reinforcement steel. The Realkalization process makes it possible to reestablish protective conditions around the steel and decrease the risks of future corrosion.

A significant benefit of electrochemical corrosion control is that it can provide long-term protection without a lot of structural replacement. These systems prevent corrosion from developing rather than repairing corrosion damage that has already happened. This proactive approach assists asset owners in minimising maintenance expenses, mitigating operations disruptions and maximising the return on their infrastructure investment.

Electrochemical corrosion control technologies are heavily relied upon in industries like transportation, marine engineering, water treatment and energy production.
