The QS 2026 Computer Science ranking puts six countries in its top 15 (the US with six universities, the UK with three, Singapore and Switzerland with two each), but the price of entry runs from free tuition at most German public universities to S$65,748.80 for NTU's MSc in AI. Switzerland leads the world on AI talent with 110.5 researchers and developers per 100,000 people, Singapore follows at 109.5, and on 7 October 2026 the US proposed a $70,000 fee on OPT work authorization that could reshape the cost of working there after graduation. Here is everything you need to know.
Why Is AI & ML Worth Studying Abroad Right Now?
It is worth studying abroad because AI hiring and research are concentrated in a few countries, and where you study decides which employers and visas you can reach. See our guide to study AI and machine learning abroad for programme-level detail.
The 2026 Stanford AI Index counts 50 notable US models in 2025 against 30 from China, with the top US model leading the top Chinese model by just 2.7%, and records $285.9 billion of US private AI investment. On jobs, Singapore's AI-skills share of job postings (4.769%) is the highest in Lightcast's country list, against about 2.5% in the US.

Switzerland: CHF 1,500–2,500 depending on the city
Singapore: about S$6,000 a year at NUS excluding housing
NOTE: The US OPT fee is a DHS proposal, not a final rule. It would charge colleges $70,000 for each initial OPT recommendation and $30,000 per extension, with a 30-day comment period from Federal Register publication on 8 October 2026 and effective 60 days after a final rule. Colleges could pass the cost to students or employers, so check each school's plans before you commit.
What Scholarships Are Available?
Most AI master's funding is institutional, not national. ETH, the French government, and the Singapore universities run the most useful schemes for international applicants.
ETH Excellence Scholarship (ESOP)
Value: CHF 12,000 a semester plus a tuition waiver for 3–4 semesters
Who It's For: top 10% of a bachelor's cohort; 2026 window closes 30 November
France Excellence Eiffel
Value: €1,200 a month at master's level; the programme itself does not cover tuition
Who It's For: applicants nominated by a French institution
NUS and NTU Research Scholarships
Value: tuition plus about S$2,900–3,000 a month
Who It's For: research-track scholars; taught programmes generally excluded
Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships
Value: CHF 1,920 a month
Who It's For: research and PhD fellows who already hold a master's
NOTE: Eiffel and ESOP are nominated or decided through the university application, so choose your universities before you plan the scholarship.
Where Are the AI Jobs? The Career Picture
The US pays the most: Talent JDI puts the average ML engineer at about $203,750 a year, with $130,000–180,000 at mid-level, against about $110,400 in Singapore ($74,000–88,000 at mid-level). Salaries for the UK, Canada, Germany, and Switzerland were not available in the source.
H-1B access is tighter: the lottery has been wage-weighted since 27 February 2026, FY2027 registrations fell 38.5% to 211,600, and the cap was met on 17 July 2026 . A $100,000 H-1B fee was set aside by a federal court on 8 June 2026.
NOTE: Switzerland's 110.5 AI professionals per 100,000 people means a dense, small job market; Germany (58.1) and the UK (49.6) rank well behind.
Work Rights and Post-Study Options
During Study
Germany allows 140 full or 280 half days a year [VERIFY: one source says 120]. Check hour limits for the US, UK, Canada, and Switzerland on official pages before planning income.
After Graduation
Germany's 18 months and the UK's 18 months (for applications from 1 January 2027, PhDs keep three years) are the longest. Switzerland's six months cannot be extended. In the US, a pending proposed rule may reduce the 24-month STEM extension.
English Requirements
NTU's MSc AI asks for TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 6.5, and NUS-ISS asks for TOEFL iBT 85. Elsewhere, expect IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90–100.
NOTE: NUS's Master of Computing requires a GRE, GMAT, or GATE score, while NTU's MSc AI makes the GRE optional.
Which Country Fits Which Student?
Lowest tuition with strong rankings: Germany, with free public tuition at most universities and an 18-month job search.
Top-10 CS brand at moderate tuition: Switzerland, at CHF 4,380 a year at ETH.
AI-heavy job market and one-year degrees: Singapore, with NUS-ISS at S$53,600.
Highest salaries and the deepest AI industry: the US, with the OPT proposal and H-1B odds as risks.
One-year MSc programmes: the UK, at £20,000–35,000.
Consider alternatives if:
Your budget is under about €12,000 for proof of funds: Germany's €11,904 is the benchmark.
You need a long post-study window: avoid Switzerland's six months.
You cannot absorb US policy risk: compare the UK, Germany and Singapore.
How Can We Help?
Choosing an AI and Machine Learning Master's involves more than comparing universities.
