Top Public Universities in the UK: Rankings, Courses, Fees, Career Prospects & ROI

by Mahesh Mysto on Oct 12, 2026 Business 8 Views

Sixteen UK universities rank in the QS World University Rankings 2027 top 100, led by Imperial College London at 2, Oxford at 4, Cambridge at 6 and UCL at 8. International undergraduate fees at top UK universities run roughly £24,000–44,000 a year, so ROI matters: the highest median graduate salary five years out, at LSE, is £55,000. Here is how the main public universities compare on rank, cost and pay, and when the numbers justify the fee.

Why Is the UK Worth Considering?

The UK is worth considering because it combines top-10 world universities with short degrees (three-year bachelor's, one-year master's) and a post-study visa. Start with our guide to study in the UK, then use this article to narrow down universities.

Most UK universities are publicly funded institutions, with a small number of private ones such as the University of Buckingham. The list below uses the 24 Russell Group research universities, ranked in QS 2027.

Master's graduates can apply for the Graduate visa: 2 years if they apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months from 1 January 2027. PhD graduates get 3 years.

NOTE: QS ranks are one measure. Check subject rankings for your course, because a university's overall rank can differ from its rank in a specific subject.

What Can You Study?

Engineering & Computing: Imperial, Cambridge, Manchester and Edinburgh are the main draws.

Business, Economics & Finance: LSE, UCL, Warwick and Manchester lead on employer links, and LSE tops the median-salary table below.

Medicine & Health: Competitive and often more expensive. Cambridge medicine is listed at up to £70,554 a year for international students.

Humanities & Social Sciences: Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and King's are strong across law, history and politics.

NOTE: Search by course, not only by university name. Entry rules and fees differ for each programme.

What Does It Cost?
Tuition Fees

Undergraduate international fees for 2026/27 at five top universities:

Birmingham: £24,000–32,160

Manchester: £27,800–39,900

Edinburgh: £29,600–38,900

UCL: £32,000–42,700

Cambridge: £29,052–44,214

Postgraduate fees range widely, from about £1,500 for diplomas to £80,000 for the Cambridge MBA. Birmingham's psychology master's is £27,090–31,500. One source's summary lists £10,000–38,000 for undergraduate and £11,000–32,000 for postgraduate, so check each university directly.

Living Costs and Visa Funds

The Student visa requires proof of funds held for 28 days:

London: £1,529 a month, up to £13,761 for 9 months

Outside London: £1,171 a month, up to £10,539 for 9 months

Visa fee: £558 from outside the UK

NOTE: Visa funds are a minimum. Recheck GOV.UK, because the page does not show when the figures took effect.

What Scholarships Are Available?

GREAT Scholarships (India)

Value: at least £10,000, depending on institution and programme

Who It's For: Indian master's applicants; 21 universities are listed for 2026, including Bath, Bristol, Nottingham, St Andrews and UCL. Bath's 2026 deadline was 8 April.

Gates Cambridge

Value: composition fee plus a £23,152 stipend (2026-27), visa costs and airfare

Who It's For: postgraduate applicants at Cambridge from outside the UK

University scholarships

Value: varies by university

Who It's For: check each course page

NOTE: A £10,000 GREAT award covers about a third of a £30,000 fee. Plan how to fund the rest.

ROI: Graduate Salaries and Career Prospects

The best official-style data I found is the Department for Education's LEO dataset, as reported by Save the Student: median salary five years after graduation. It covers 2021/22 and reflects graduates who finished in 2016, so it is dated and mainly covers UK graduates.

LSE: £55,000

Imperial: £53,300

Cambridge: £46,400

Oxford: £46,000

UCL: £42,700

King's College London: £42,300

Bath: £41,600

Bristol and Durham: £41,200

Warwick: £40,900

Salaries vary widely by subject, and the table leans toward southern English universities, with none from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

A simple ROI check. A three-year UCL degree at £32,000–42,700 a year costs £96,000–128,100 in tuition alone, against a median salary of £42,700 five years on. LSE's £55,000 median gives a faster payback, but the data is not adjusted for subject or cost of living. Use this as a rough comparison, not a forecast.

NOTE: A graduate role must also meet visa rules to count. The Skilled Worker general salary threshold is £41,700 a year or the going rate, whichever is higher.

Work Rights and Post-Study Options

During Study

GOV.UK says how much you can work depends on your course and whether it is term time. Exact limits were not on the pages I read, so check the points-based system student route guidance.

After Graduation

The Graduate visa costs £937 plus the healthcare surcharge, usually £1,035 per year of stay. It cannot be extended, but you may switch to another route such as a Skilled Worker visa.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Visa Type: UK Student visa

Visa Fee: £558 from outside the UK

Financial Proof: £1,529 a month in London, £1,171 elsewhere, up to 9 months, plus first-year fees

Health Insurance: Immigration Health Surcharge, paid with the application

Work Rights: depends on course and term time

Post-Study Residence: Graduate visa, 18 months from 1 January 2027 (master's); 3 years (PhD)

English Requirements

Each university sets its own English score and test validity, and some tests are valid for only two years, so your result must be valid on the course start date.

NOTE: Check whether your university accepts your test before you book it.

What Are the Best Student Cities in the UK?

London. Imperial, UCL, King's, LSE and Queen Mary. The highest funds band at £1,529 a month, and the largest employer base.

Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh (35) and Glasgow (80) fall in the lower funds band of £1,171 a month if outside London.

Manchester. The University of Manchester (40); undergraduate fees of £27,800–39,900.

Oxford and Cambridge. Smaller collegiate cities with Oxford (4) and Cambridge (6).

Who Are Top UK Public Universities Best Suited For?

Students aiming at top-10 world universities such as Imperial, Oxford, Cambridge and UCL.

Finance and economics students targeting LSE's £55,000 median salary.

Master's students who want one-year degrees and the 18-month Graduate visa.

Applicants who can fund £24,000–44,000 a year in undergraduate tuition.

Consider alternatives if:

You cannot cover £96,000+ for a three-year degree; compare other countries.

You need more than 18 months of post-study stay on a master's.

You want guaranteed funding; GREAT starts at £10,000, not full fees.
