What is a Ductile Iron Pipe?

Ductile iron pipe is made from iron treated with spheroidizing elements such as magnesium (rare earth elements are also used), so that the graphite forms as small spheres rather than flakes. Spheroidal graphite splits the metal matrix far less than flake graphite, which gives ductile iron much higher strength and toughness than gray cast iron. Besides iron, ductile iron typically contains about 3.0–4.0% carbon and 1.8–3.2% silicon. The performance of the pipe varies with the casting process and the matrix structure.

Ductile iron is used for pipes, fittings and other castings that need strength and toughness. Ductile iron pipes are mainly used in water supply and distribution, especially in small and medium diameters, and in underground pipelines where ground conditions are uncertain.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Ductile Iron Pipes

1. Advantages：

Strength and adaptability: it withstands water supply pressure and external loads and adapts to changing ground conditions when designed for them.

Better than ordinary cast iron: much higher strength, toughness and impact resistance, with thinner walls and lower weight.

Flexible, tight joints: rubber-ring joints seal well, reduce leakage and shorten construction time.

Versus concrete and PVC pipe: more flexible at joints than prestressed concrete pipe, and stronger and more rigid than PVC pipe.

Corrosion performance: it can be used in coastal and saline areas with suitable coatings and linings.

2. Disadvantages：

Installation quality: joint performance depends on correct assembly and workmanship.

Weight and handling: the pipe is heavy and usually needs lifting equipment.

Not always the first choice: for very high-pressure or large-diameter long lines, steel pipe is often preferred.

Protection still required: aggressive soils or fluids need additional protection.

Cost versus PVC: PVC pipe is generally lower priced and lighter for low-pressure, small-diameter service.
