Seamless mechanical tubing is seamless carbon and alloy steel tubing made for machined and fabricated components, including machinery parts, automotive parts, hydraulic equipment, heavy equipment and agricultural equipment. Because these parts are machined and carry load in service, the material, dimensions, tolerances and mechanical properties of the tubing matter. It is commonly specified to ASTM A519 and is supplied in two types: Cold Drawn Seamless (CDS) and Hot Finished Seamless (HFS).
Types of Seamless Mechanical Tubing
The choice between CDS and HFS depends on the application, size requirements and purchasing needs.
1. Cold Drawn Seamless (CDS)
CDS tubing is hot-finished tube that is further drawn through a die at room temperature. It is used where tighter dimensions and a smoother surface are required. CDS tubing can be supplied to ASTM A519 (cold finished). For the manufacturing process, tolerances and surface quality in detail.
Main Features of CDS:
Good surface finish – Good machinability – Tighter dimensional tolerances
2. Hot Finished Seamless (HFS)
Hot finished seamless (HFS) tubing is supplied in the hot-finished condition, without the final cold-drawing step. It is easy to machine and is suitable for applications where a close dimensional tolerance or a smooth surface finish is not required. HFS tubing can be supplied to ASTM A519 (hot finished) and is commonly used for applications requiring a thicker, heavier wall. SAE 1026 carbon steel is one example of a grade used, but HFS is not limited to a single grade.
