To determine the unbiased rate of KHCO3 decomposition, a slow-rising and constant-temperature TGA method was employed on finely ground small samples. Although the pore volume (0.2309 cm3/g) formed by calcination was independent of temperature at 403-503 K, the average pore diameter and grain size increased with increasing temperature. The diagrams provided allow for easy prediction of conditions to achieve near complete conversion of bicarbonate and minimize poor sintering of nascent carbonate.
