Although menadione can act as a precursor to various vitamin Ks, it is not generally used as a nutritional supplement in economically developed countries. Menadione is available in medicinal concentrations in some lower-income countries, such as India. [2] Typical daily doses are 10 mg orally or 2 mg parenterally. menadione is used to treat hypoprothrombinemia outside the United States.
Menadione is not known to be carcinogenic. [13] K3 can lead to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation through redox cycling and thiol arylation using its reactive 3-position. [5] ROS production explains various toxic effects of excess menadione, including DNA damage and cell death,[13] or at the whole animal level, cardiac and renal toxicity in rats
This compound is known as vitamin K3[6] and provitamin K3. [7] Proponents of the latter designation generally believe that the compound is not a true vitamin, as it is in an artificial state (before it was identified as a cyclic intermediate) and lacks a 3-methyl side chain, preventing it from performing all its functions [Which? ] Vitamin K.
It is an intermediate in the chemical synthesis of vitamin K and is first reduced to the diol menylene glycol, which is easily coupled with phytol. [8]
