Although menadione can act as a precursor to various vitamin Ks, it is not generally used as a nutritional supplement in economically developed countries. Menadione is available in medicinal concentrations in some lower-income countries, such as India. Menadione is not known to be carcinogenic. [13] K3 can lead to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation through redox cycling and thiol arylation using its reactive 3-position. [5] ROS production explains various toxic effects of excess menadione, including DNA damage and cell death,[13] or at the whole animal level, cardiac and renal toxicity in rats
This compound is known as vitamin K3[6] and provitamin K3.
