Are you considering buying a new handgun? There are a number of factors to consider before you make your choice. Revolver vs. Semi-Automatic

The classic debate compares the revolver to the semi-automatic. A 9mm revolver is reliable and has fewer moving parts than a Glock 19, but the Glock will be able to hold far more ammo. If you are going to anything other than a cowboy-themed competition, a revolver probably will not be able to win you any modern competitions. They are different shooting styles and operate much differently. Reloading is an entirely different process as well.

Caliber

There are a few decisions to make when you decide on caliber. First is the price of the ammo you are going to shoot. Choosing a 22 handgun means you will have plenty of plinking. When choosing a 9mm, you still have a fairly common round, but it will be slightly more expensive per shot. A 45, like a 1911, can be harder for newer shooters to handle, thanks to recoil, unless the gun is heavy. There are plenty of other rounds, ranging from rare and obsolete rounds to newer rounds, that have found some popularity. Some rounds—especially on older guns—can be much harder to find unless you are making the rounds yourself or you pay a premium for rounds made in smaller production sizes.

Gun Size

What size of handgun are you looking for? Do you want a full-size handgun? Something larger to handle higher calibers? Or do you want something compact for concealed carrying? Even within the Glock line, you can find differences. The Glock 17 is a full handgun, while a Glock 35 features an extended barrel for better line of sight and is chambered in 40 S&W. A Glock 19 is a compact version of the 17, while you can find a Glock 26 or 43 for a subcompact 9mm or a Glock 27 for 40 S&W. The gun size you choose might depend on what you are using it for and what caliber you want. A subcompact may be perfect for concealed carry but will not be ideal for competition.

Aftermarket Support

Finally, you should consider what kind of aftermarket support is available for your handgun of choice. A Jericho 941 is not hard to find parts for, as it is used by the Israeli Army and is based on the CZ platform. Glocks and 1911s have more aftermarket parts than you could hope for. Meanwhile, other handguns or older handguns might be harder to find parts or upgrades for your handgun.
