Many chemical used in personal care products are dangerous at high concentrations, in high doses (for laboratory animals) and in industrial doses. Some people may be allergic to a small amount, such as what you find in personal care products, and endocrine disrupting chemicals can have an effect in very small doses.
The hazards and warnings in the chemical safety data sheet (MSDS) are often cited by various websites warning chemicals in cosmetics. The MSDS for each chemical provides information about its characteristics, how to handle it, all possible hazards (accidents, prolonged exposure, etc.) and how to deal with them. Chemical names and MSDS can be easily found by searching online for chemical names and MSDs. However, MSDSs are not intended for consumers; they are suitable for those who are exposed to large amounts of concentrated chemicals at work, rather than those who use diluted or very small amounts of chemicals.
Many warnings also relate to the effects of high-dose chemicals on laboratory animals, especially rats and mice, which cannot reliably predict the effects of low-dose chemicals on humans. For example, substances that cause cancer in mice do not necessarily cause cancer in mice, and vice versa. Human life is also more complex, and exposure to food, lifestyle and environmental factors may increase or decrease the carcinogenic potential of a particular substance. On the contrary, substances that are safe for laboratory animals can be dangerous to humans.
Some people who are cautious about "chemical" tend to favor natural cosmetics as safer and better for you. But natural cosmetics are not always a better choice. For example, many natural ingredients can cause skin reactions and allergies, including lavender, tea tree oil, lanolin, cinnamon (and derivatives), citrus oil and various essential oils. Some, such as lavender and tea tree oil, have been linked to hormonal disorders in boys.
People may even become allergic to the ingredients in cosmetics and produce potentially harmful food allergies. It has been reported that some people have developed food allergies to goat's milk and cheese after using goat's milk soap or moisturizer on the skin. Other reports have linked food allergies to skincare products containing almond oil, peanuts, wheat and oats.
Dermatology and toxicology experts we interviewed agreed that, based on current knowledge, cosmetic ingredients on the market are safe to use according to guidance.
Dr rosemary Nixon of the Australian Academy of Dermatology said: "the use of these chemicals is very small, and some products, such as shampoo, are used for a short time." "Cosmetics are defined as their temporary effects and inability to change our body's physiology. Very few products penetrate the outer layer of the skin. "
In the future, when these chemical have been used for decades and / or more rigorous studies have been conducted, it may be found that ingredients currently considered safe have some long-term harmful effects.
Now, without evidence of good harm, consumers need to decide for themselves whether the benefits of using products containing these ingredients outweigh any potential risks, and whether these risks outweigh known lifestyle related risks, such as poor eating habits, lack of physical exercise, excessive drinking, exposure to the sun and occupational hazards.
If you're worried, the best option is to buy products from major international brands, or at least avoid products that don't have a list of ingredients.
