It is also essential to recognise every file by its name as there can be multiple files in a single system. Hence, every file carries a unique name so that it gets recognised quickly based on its type and the information it holds.

The name of one file should be different from that of another. It means that a single directory may not have more than two files coming under the same name.

Identifier 

Alongside the name, each file in the system has its own extension in order to identify the type of that particular file. 

For instance; a text file will be having the extension .txt. While a video file will be having the extension .mp4. 

In this way, you will easily be able to recognise the type of file without any type of confusion. 

Type 

In the file system, every file is being classified on the basis of its types. Files are generally classified into various types such as the audio files, video files, executable files, text files and much more. 

Various file types can be differentiated in the form of text files, source and binary code. There will also be character special files which are hardware files to read or write the data characters from mouse, printer and other devices. 

Then there are ordinary files to store all kinds of user information in the form of texts, programs, databases and much more. They can perform the operations of addition or deletion. 

Location 

There is a separate location for every file where they can be stored. Each file will have its own separate location and they will be stored in all of these specific locations.

Size 

Size of any file is generally touted among its most important attributes. When we are talking about the size of a file, we mean by saying that the size of any file is acquired by its number of bytes that will be acquired by each file in its respective memory.

Protection 

Your file may need protection from different kinds of resources and the admin too wants the protection for the varied kind of files. In this case, all kinds of protective measures should be taken. As each file will carry its set of permissions for the different users that he or she has to fulfil. 

Time, date or security 

This attribute is basically used for the time on which the file is edited. It shows all the time in which a file is being edited by the user.
